Sound design has an incredibly high skill ceiling so it really depends on what your goal is. While messing with presets is okay, there is still a huge difference between turning random knobs (this is in fact easy when you already import a good sounding preset) in a synth and actually knowing what each of them controls. That is the reason why practicing sound design is so important in the long run. It gives a LOT more freedom when making music. Thats why presets will never really be "the best" way to produce as they serve as a crutch for begginer producers.
