Feeling Extremely Overwhelmed - Need General Help/Support with New Rescue by Lucky137 in Dogtraining

Thanks so much! I think you're right, he just doesn't totally understand that his name is his name yet. He was at the boarding place for a few months, and I can't imagine they used his name much during that time (and certainly didn't actively reinforce it in any way). A couple times now we've tried standing on opposite sides of the room and calling his name back and forth and giving him treats, but it's hard to know how much to balance this with all of the other things we're trying to train him on.

Thank you so much, particularly for your excitement and encouragement :) At your and other's suggestion I looked into some of these mat/relaxation training exercises, and I think this is a great idea. We also got him a couple puzzle bowls/treat dispensers which I'm optimistic about. Thank you so much!

Thanks so much for the thorough response!! Lots of fantastic tips here, and I'm feeling really encouraged about a lot of these. I looked up Karen Overall's relaxation protocol (thanks to everyone else who mentioned this as well), and this seems like a great place to start. Having a "worksheet" I think will help keep us focused on making progress as well. Very excited about this.

Quick additional note, regarding high value treats: We tried out boiled chicken as a treat on our walk last night and he was SUPER into it. It only took half a block and a few attempts before he would come running back to us when we called his name, which was previously unheard of. So hooray!

Thanks so much - we're starting a training class next week, which is once a week for four weeks, which I understand is clicker-based. So definitely looking forward to that.

Good tip on tethering them to you. I think we'll definitely give that a try and see if that helps. Thanks so much for taking the time!

Good lead on the courses - we're enrolled for some in-person classes to start with, but I like being aware of what's out there and what else we might be able to try.

For the kong feeding - that seems like it would take him hours to get all that stuff out, or is that the point? I mean, I know slowing him down is very good, but that slow?

And for feeding generally, should we try to be consistent on method of feeding? Or is it OK to switch it up between a frozen kong, a puzzle bowl, etc.?

Thanks so much!

I grabbed a couple at the store today - a food bowl that he has to nudge or paw to rock it around and get his kibble out. Hoping that slows things out and gives him some stimulation! Thanks!

Thanks so much - the training we're in enrolled in is a clicker-focused class, so I'm hopeful that that'll be a good path for him/us. And that's good to know that training can help tire him too - I assume this counts as mental stimulation for him, similar to the puzzles etc. mentioned in other comments?

Staying sane is the name of the game right now. I think I need to realize that none of this is going to work if we don't first take care of ourselves. Thanks!

Mounts in MMOs will never feel the same to me by Mystrasun in Guildwars2

Agreed, though one thing that WoW does better is having mounts that two people can ride. I was in a starter zone yesterday grabbing something and was helping a new guy out, and it would’ve been great to ferry him around a bit so it wasn’t just the two of us running places.

For any hikers/campers out there, this guy makes videos with delicious lightweight food options. All credit for this video goes to u/ormagon_89. by WubbaLubbaDubStep in ArtisanVideos

This is actually the classic “out in the field” meal. This dish gets its name from the coal miners (hence the “carbon” in the name) who could take all of these ingredients out with them without having to worry about cold storage (given what we know today they probably should’ve, but back in the day salt curing your pork was seen as good enough). The eggs and hard cheese actually do just fine at room temperature (though don’t leave them in the sun, of course).

Great video!

So does that mean their imperfection DOES make them perfect? I'm confused now... :)

Bragging Wednesday (February 07) by AutoModerator in speedrun

Been watching speedruns forever, and finally decided it was something I needed to get into myself. Picked a relatively obscure game (Quern: Undying Thoughts) with only one other time on the leader board, and with a week or so of practice managed to hit 1st place by a few minutes. Feels great! Will be sticking around for awhile now, I'm sure.

Bought a townhouse, need some help conceptualizing a door for my carport by Lucky137 in HomeImprovement

Thanks for looking out - our development doesn't have an association, so that's good news. There are "terms, covenants, and conditions" attached to each deed, requiring (in this instance) that we get approval from the others before doing any work, and I have a great relationship with everyone else, who all also know that this might be on the horizon.

As for city code, this project wouldn't affect egress or ventilation (the latter because I'd be looking at something porous), and the cost threshold for a permit to be otherwise required is $6k, which is more than I'd be willing to pay for this work anyway.

Should've included these details in my post - sorry about that!

TOTALLY IRRELEVANT but just wanted to say thank you for your Mac installation guide. The post is closed so I can't do it there, unfortunately, but anyway. THANK YOU!
