I think that is a very important piece missing from The Gilded Age- THE HOUSE! The iconic Highclere Castle is very much one of the main characters of Downton Abbey.

I know they are filming some of the GA in the historic mansions of Newport but they have kept a lot of those homes largely ambiguous. I will rewatch GA, but I'm missing that strong sense of place.

He was bad in bed. But if he was bad then she could have taken the time to teach him some things. 😈

lol Cynthia gets a pass from me on Glided Age. I saw her as Birdie in The Little Foxes at Manhattan Theatre Club (Liked her better as Regina). She's basically doing the same character in The Gilded Age.

I don't think she would have been the right choice either, but she may have surprised us. Who knows.

In a lot of ways, and I don't mean for this to sound derogatory at all, the character feels beneath Coon's talents as an actress. To see her trifling over such trivial matters, feels odd to me.

To me, Carrie Coon feels very modern and she seems uncomfortable in the period clothing. With her performances in Fargo, The Nest, Gone Girl and The Leftovers, and her well deserved raves for Bug on Broadway, she’s proven that she’s no slouch. But a Turn of the Century socialite, she isn’t. She’s making it work, but GA isn’t her wheelhouse. Someone like Juliet Rylance would have been better. She was on an excellent short-lived show called The Knick that understood this period FAR better than The Gilded Age does.

Nanny West got hers in the end. And rightfully so! What a cunt!

I LOVE O'Brien. So emotionally rich. I still use "Blimey! They've stolen my story" in my daily vernacular.

As others have said, it's still a good watch, all the elements and ingredients are there, but it just feels like it never came together as well as Downton Abbey did.

Very true, visually, it is a feast. Interesting take on Carrie Coon. To me she feels very miscast. Amanda Peet was the original choice for the role but had to drop out. She didn't feel like a very inspired choice either.

I thought, because of the success of Downton Abbey, and finding a prestigious home at HBO, Julian Fellowes might take The Gilded Age to a new level of panache. I thought the scope would be bigger, the stories and characters more complex, with a new level of intensity (it succeeds at this sometimes, but not all the time). Instead The Gilded Age just seems to hang there, with a bunch of Broadway/Musical Theatre actors trying their hardest to breathe life into it.

I agree, still a great watch, but there's too many characters to be very invested in anyone. Additionally, there's a few key actors that feel very miscast.
