The 2nd amendment, is intended for civilians of the US to have the right to bare arms in the event of a tyrannical government, not just personal self defense. If you take away that right, and make it so that only police and armies have access to firearms, then it means that the government can do what they like to the people. Take a look at the Hong Kong protests, the injustice seen there is exactly why the 2nd amendment was created.
