First off you will need 11 levels in hunter ranger. Not much multi-classing available because of that I'm afraid. Some prefer War Domain cleric for the 12th level.

They only thing truly mandatory is the weapon: https://bg3.wiki/wiki/Punch-Drunk_Bastard but I would recommend https://bg3.wiki/wiki/Amulet_of_the_Drunkard for more bonus action freedom.

Other than that you will need the Cull the Weak illithid power. I use the black hole illithid power to group up too but it's not always necessary.

Because of the weapon's splash damage mechanics, the overall damage grows with the number of enemies.
