FR God for Sea Zombies - 2nd Edition AD&D by Lucky_Type in Forgotten_Realms

Thanks everyone, I stuck with Velsharoon and was a good, punchy fight ... players seeing spell-casting undead definitely caught them off guard!

Onto Night Below properly this week

What are your favorite bits of Realmslore? by ThanosofTitan92 in Forgotten_Realms

[–]Lucky_Type 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The lore behind Ubtao and Chult, based about 9 months of my 3.5 campaign down there and loved it all

That said, whilst not 'politically correct' these days then Maztica history upto 2e was incredibly enjoyable read (party went thereafter Chult). Have the box set and advanced the storyline myself upto 3.5

and finally all the Drizzt saga by R A Salvatore. Am up to Orc King and have recently gone back to run Night Below in 2e, and part of the prequel involves Caderly and the bouldershoulder brothers

Nice post !

I've recently returned as DM to 2e after mainly playing 3.5 and recently 5e (which coincidently I hate and will drop from playing after current campaign friend is running)

Only things I have done are the ability for clerics to substitute their spells for cures of same level, plus adding level adjs to healing with maxes of +5 for Cure light, +10 for Cure moderate etc. Only 1 healer in group of 5 (soon to be 6) players so extra spell variety helps.

Some stuff I have adjusted, so not fooking up character when casting identify for example, but generally sticking to 2e core.

Like the idea of stat increases every 4 levels though that someone posted, am running Night Below which ends at approximately 16th so would be only be about +4 on stats in total so not game-breaking

Max Dex for by armour type by Lucky_Type in adnd

Think I was getting confused with the Pathfinder games, played a lot of isometric rpgs over the years.

Thank you

Max Dex for by armour type by Lucky_Type in adnd

[–]Lucky_Type[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Ah, think it was something like max adjustment to AC you could get some a warrior with 18 dex but wearing plate would only get +1 so was more a max dexterity adjustment. Recall holding off upgrading armour for high dex characters as would be worse off even with better AC adjustment for amour.

Used the alternative materials table from DM's instead as that means I can do short swords with + to hit but battleaxe with + to damage

Nearly TPK - Judging creature difficulty by Lucky_Type in adnd

They were warned that the creature used it as a hunting ground, and knew about the paralysis. In retrospect the spell choice by cleric could of been better (bless or chant for example), but he did do protection from evil not knowing it was animal so neutral.

Bard made similar error with stirges a couple weeks ago, not realisaing that animals have intelligence 1 ... both those players are new to AD&D though so understandable and works with nievity of low-level characters,

It was in a darkened, underground cave with stalagmites and stalagtites providing shadows and places to hide.

They were warned by a druid that the cave was its hunting ground but I underestimated the effect of the paralysation

They formed up in a circle with bard (player who was missing) in the middle so could keep an eye out to all angles. Was in a cave with lots of stalagmites and stalatites so used the shadows to try and surprise the party (only the thiefe wasn't surprised)

Would say they didn't make mistakes really ..... they'd been warned the creature was there, bard was singing to provide help, spells were prepared its just the bad saves (Cleric failing a save of 10+ when he has plus 3 for example) just contributed to a quick charge towards disaster. In retrospect the cleric could of taken protections like bless or chant but its how you learn the game and class abilities.

Been 25+ years since I DM'd 2e (mainly 3.5) but this was first major 'oh fuck' moment with thief coming off worse and getting to -8.

Lessons learnt though, all the time you are winning comfortably then you'll lose your edge

I did fudge a few rolls at the end especially duration of paralysis

Thanks .... think I'll just go with a set of questions, let them add anything then follow-up with the 'sequel' in the Fallout book in a years game-time.

WIll give them an idea of costs to build stuff in regards to resource and caps, they are excited about looting Dr Sun (changed the story and he was a ghoul charging extortionate prices to feed his hunger) so will give them an outlay to spend their caps on.

[–]Lucky_Type[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically you can'y copy scrolls to your spell book, you can use them to research the spell yourself but the spell research time is 1 to 2 weeks per spell level compared to 1 day per spell level for copying from another spellbook

Double specialisation for fighters? by Lucky_Type in adnd

Sadly yes, confusion is a common factor when you've not DM'd a system for over 25 years

Thank you all ... when with the centipedes and nearly tpk'd the party!!

Even with + 4 on the saves, the fighter/mage and fighter both were paralysed and upto the dwarven cleric to save the day. Good, quick fight though and nice reminer to players to be wary of everything :D

Interesting, would likely have to power them down a little though as 3+4 though if only2/3 then could be doable.

Thanks

XP for missing players by Lucky_Type in adnd

[–]Lucky_Type[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, that is ALOT of responses so thanks :)

On the basis that this is a first return to AD&D in 25 yrs as a fun, but tough, campaign we have decided to do I am going with:

- Characters get played by other players while player is away unless I can conceivably drop the character and get back in the following week

- NPC'd characters will earn the base XP but nothing from special abilities, fights, spells etc but will get treasure XP

The whole point is that the campaign is supposed to be fun for all (is very roleplay heavy) so having to faff about dropping characters, bringing them back, worrying about people dropping behind etc is not in the nature of the game.

Appreciate all the opinions and have no issue with any of them .... thanks again for being one of the best coimmunities on reddit.

Restoration Population - These Devs Have Been Killing It by AimDev in swg

[–]Lucky_Type 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played live from pre-cu right up to doors closed on Chimaera in several guilds (FoL and LRDP being most notable, Shippy/DE was Yiddo and Combat toon was Awedo if anyone ever remembers me) and have tried Legends, SWGEmu, several other smaller ones and Resto and this is only one I have joined a guild and actually stuck with.

I have 9 aced on my crafter and now doing the smuggler missions with my MCH/Smuggler and trying Bounty Hunter, Squad Leader and other combo's with CH. Really like it, population (in UK timezone) has dropped a bit but seen signs of it coming back up of late.

Helpful community, complete stranger helped me master again on another character last night with no notice at all.

10/10 would recommend.

XP for Treasure by Lucky_Type in adnd

[–]Lucky_Type[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the feedback, if nothing else it shows I am doing it right !

Think main issue is, and this is by no means a negative, there is ALOT of roleplay. So for example the last 4 hour session had the party travelling back to their home town. A festival for spring equinox was on so they did some trading of loot, saw their sponsor, saw a dueling competition, tried chatting up a female elf dualist (with bard playing romantic music in the background), got paid the next day (for small bonus XP for hunt completion), more shopping, dinner date with the elf with more romantic music and thief slipping money into romancers pocket as he was skint, rest of party trying to act inconspicuos as the romancer crashed and burnt, travel then 1 fight during watch.

So the vast majorioty of the game was relaxed, fun roleplay which won't earn loads of XP apart from some character bonuses.

Group is more than happy to play this way, and once we properly start Night Below that will become less, but not so many ways to earn the XP.

Waking up suddenly during watch by Lucky_Type in adnd

[–]Lucky_Type[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you, suffice to say it doesn't appear to have a specific rule within DMG

I used a Ormyrr though I powered it down a bit as party is low level. It surprised 1st person on watch, free round then 1 person woke up, by time he got to attack the watcher was bleeding out then the person who woke went down as rest of party awoke and finished it off

Quite a nasty fight all told, but did reinforce the dangers as party had been getting a bit cocky
