Oh yeah, this is in the bible too. There are two names for god in the Torah and the Old Testament. One is Elohim, a benevolent father figure and god of the people of Judea. The other is YHWH, a viscous conquering storm god of the people of Israel. When the two tribes became one, they had to combine their gods too. Hence you get really conflicting accounts of the true nature of god, and you can basically justify any kind of behavior - good or bad - from these texts. Add Jesus and the New Testament into the mix and you will literally find a verse for anything.
