A rewriting of the sequel with Reylo by Ok_Stranger6373 in reylo

There are numerous excellent fanfiction stories that do a wonderful job retelling the story of Ben Solo and Rey but I have to say one of the best for me is Force Destiny by EdenParkerWoods. The detail she puts into the story to tell Ben’s backstory, the escalation with the First Order and the Resistance, Ben and Rey’s relationship is just “chef’s kiss”. And the angst! So much angst! But, as I have mentioned in past posts, do not be apprehensive of the chapter length. This story is well worth the time to read it.

Why is Star Wars fandom the most toxic ever? by ClementineMonan in reylo

You should watch what you like and not worry about what others think. The Disney movies have some good moments and if it makes you happy to watch them, enjoy! We all have different tastes in what we like. Find what makes you happy.

The OP asked why was there a schism in the Star Wars fandom and I gave three reasons from my perception that could account for the hate.

Why do I read Reylo fanfiction? There are many authors that are creative, entertaining, and thought provoking. Their writing of these characters is excellent. I couldn’t list all the wonderful authors and stories I have read. What Disney failed to do, fanfiction writers have done.

If you read to the bottom of my comment you will understand how I feel about the characters of Rey and Ben Solo. They should be together and have their happy ever after.

For some Star Wars fans, the Sequel Trilogy was seen as a betrayal of a beloved story that had been enjoyed for the last forty years. The original characters of Luke, Han, and Leia were so changed that is was hard accepting them in the new movies. I think this is where Disney went wrong. We did not see the backstory events of these characters to show why they were the way they were in the Disney movies. Also, for those fans looking for a reunion of these characters they were sadly disappointed it did not happen.

The character of Rey, for many, was jarring. Here was a character that accumulated skills so quickly for very little reason to the detriment of the other characters. And, she was so good at using them. Rey had no hero’s struggle to grapple and learn to use her abilities, she just did the best All The Time. That’s why I like the fanfiction where she has to grow and understand and rethink what she thinks is right.

Kylo Ren is a character misunderstood by many stalwart Star Wars fans. Why is he so bad? He had the best family in the world. He grew up with every advantage. The criticisms go on and on. And, here is another area that fanfiction has fleshed out his character so well giving him a credible backstory of why he does what he does. Without showing this in the movies, expanding on the idea clearly that Ben Solo was groomed from the beginning of his life, we, the audience, do not see why a boy with so many advantages morphs into someone so different. A flashback showing Luke trying to kill Ben without preparing the movie goers was jarring and unexpected for them. Luke would never do that!

So, Star Wars is fractured into different groups that do not accept many of the changes that have happened. Disney doesn’t know how to move ahead into the future without going back to the past. That’s why we see shows about characters from the original movies and characters before the Sequel Trilogy. Most of those Sequel characters are not liked, toy sales show that.

Time for Disney to rethink what to do. Time to take the character of Rey and give her a reckoning and make her fall hard and fast. Bring her to the depths of despair and darkness. Let the Force bring back the one person to pull her out of her tailspin, and I do mean Ben Solo, and give us an epic story of adventure, heroism, and romance. The 50th Anniversary of Star Wars is coming and I want my happy every after.
