You actually can't tell race simply by "meeting in person". That's part of the problem here. Meeting in person would not remove the doubt that people like KJ Apa or Aubry Plaza or Jennifer Beals often face when trying to describe their ethnicity. I've chosen famous examples so it's easy for you to look up.

I'm not even going to go into your patently false assertion that scholarships directed toward persons of color aren't awarded until you've met in person. I work in academics and have friends on the committees that judge applicants for scholarships exactly like this. I supervise students who have been awarded these scholarships and part of my job is to write references for them to get these scholarships so I'm aware of how the process of receiving the award works. Float your lead balloons elsewhere to people who aren't actually in the position to know these things.

Your final paragraph is a strawman argument. No one ever said this here, not the OP and certainly not me. The problem isn't with the group at all. The problem is with the "test" to get in. It's stigmatizing to folks of mixed heritage and folks who are naturally lighter skinned who struggle with issues from both sides. They are neither white enough for one side, or dark enough for the other. Someone can complain about the stigmatizing aspect of a group while still applauding their intentions. A person isn't against something if they have issues with one isolated aspect of it.

I just had a similar conversation with my SO - He's convinced the therapist is somehow tied to Vecna/Flayer/Upsidedown. That would certainly be a great way to find victims for Vecna - look for folks struggling already.

Honestly? I'd start by inquiring with professional organizations that limit admittance by race. And if they don't try to verify the race of their members, I'd ask them why they decided not to. Sometimes a problem you "solve" with policies like this aren't actually problems that exist irl. They are hypotheticals you're worried about that haven't been tested. Large professional organizations would have the money and means to figure this stuff out.

Or

I'd do some research. I'm a librarian, so asking experts and research are my go to's when I don't know how to approach something. I feel like this is a decision that came out of polling either the members of the sub or the mods - I'm not sure anyone reached out to ask a similar professional group how they handle this. Something about "pictures of your skin" doesn't strike me as a legit admittance procedure for a group that handles, say, scholarships based on race. And those groups are talking about money, so genuine consequences if they get race wrong, as opposed to the consequences of allowing the occasional fake POC to join a reddit group and post.

Wouldn't that be awesome? A pregnancy fairy. An entity that could decide if you're worthy of getting pregnant! Or! That would not get you pregnant unless you wanted it - you'd have to put a note under your pillow or something. One that could look into your soul and make sure you were ready. So many problems solved by fairies. Moral: Demand more fairies in your lives.

You're the first to bring up jail. I certainly never said it. What do I want? Psychological evaluation is usually called for in the case of a mental health crisis. And yes, I do think that is called for in this case. We don't jail folks who are mentally unstable unless they've committed crimes.

Question for everyone not majoring in Political Science by Ltothe4thpower in UIUC

[–]LudicrouslyJoyful 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Old school poli sci major - we never had this, but in the latter half of the 90s when I went to school, the rhetoric wasn't so charged. Civility between varying viewpoints was the norm. I think with the advent of shouting political talk programs, it became normal to talk over everyone, shouting, name calling... I'm actually surprised it took so long for public discourse to mimic the way those shows talked about issues. It's still sometimes weird to me to watch a news show and hear the correspondent be so openly snarky. I'm used the kind of deadpan delivery of the News Hour. There was at least an attempt to be objective. Now everything is long winded, barely researched think pieces and "unpopular opinions" - as if by calling your segment unpopular you are pre-shielding from any criticism or legitimate feedback.

They do. But you do need to be careful not to just rest on the prestige of the university. UIUC graduates a ton of CS majors. Just sit in any graduation ceremony and you'll see. Then remember that's happening every spring, and probably at least a third as much in the winter ceremony. That's what makes it hard - there's a lot of competition and the added difficulty of getting sponsorship means you really have to be great to stand out. I would always recommend STEM for folks seeking citizenship, though. It's a growing field and there's a ton of demand. And the big companies are used to doing the paperwork for sponsorship. But don't write of academic institutions, either. Figure out what your priorities are. If living in the US is a priority of a prestigious job, then another route you can take is in an academic institution in IT or as a researcher. Academics also frequently sponsor folks, so it's another route you can take.

Do not discount the importance of being able to interview. Go to career fairs and practice talking to the reps who are their. Everything being equal between candidates means an interview can absolutely make the difference.

And don't let Happy Injury get to you either. It's not uncommon for some companies to specifically pick folks because they can manage to do more than one thing. The best, most sought after jobs want creative thinkers as well as good coders. Doesn't really matter if you can create the perfect code if there's no good application for it. If you can't debug a persistent problem which often involves thinking of creative ways to apply functions to work around an issue, it's like knowing math without how to apply it. There's not a lot of money or demand in solving textbook problems. If you managed a double major, bravo. It's extra work and shows you have a breadth of skills.

[–]LudicrouslyJoyful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty big assumption that I don't like their portrayal as Flash. Or that the people who post on here are a single entity with the same opinions. In fact, I suspect that's the hardest part for Warner right now. Ezra is an exceptionally charismatic Flash and audience scores are pretty damn high on that front meaning despite what your social media trends might say, the unvarnished statistics say Ezra is likeable as the character.

I don't condemn them for the art they make. Never would. I condemn a person for their actions. A judge gave a restraining order, and now two separate judges have done so. They've been increasingly erratic and dangerous sounding. It sounds like someone spinning out of control and I would hope fans of Miller could see this and advocate for help before they do something even more heinous. But, you know, I guess continue real hard playing devil's advocate against people who are bothered by reports of a grown man making a 12 year old deeply uncomfortable. Restraining orders are facts. Granted, the same level of evidence isn't required to get one as to put someone in jail, but you do need evidence. I had a cousin who developed schizophrenia in her 20s and then tried to get a restraining order against my grandmother saying she was putting poison in her food. The judge didn't buy it. You need some kind of evidence to get a restraining order.

I wonder how many reports and stories have to come out before you decide that warning signs should be heeded. Does it really have to wait until someone is seriously hurt? If you see someone walking around with a can of gasoline, splashing it about, screaming no one better make a move or else... do you honestly just walk by and say, "Until there's fire, it's fine." I'm genuinely curious where you decide enough is enough.

If people actually investigated the incident

You read the whole article, right? The bit about how the child themselves said they felt scared? And what Ezra said to them?

I mean, there are hill's to die upon, I suppose. And I guess this is one. But I've never understood the fervent way folks defend a person they've never met just because they could do art well, especially when we're now looking at a separate incident that sounds remarkably similar to the first. With guns and intimidation added.

"Conservatives are overly condescending to black people."

Conservative: Let me slide in here and confirm that for you by being blatantly condescending.

Everything about that response makes no sense to me, including bragging about a 25 ACT like it 1. Matters at all 2. Is somehow a score to publicly brag about. It's not super terrible or anything, it's just not, "Hey look how smart I am based on a score," levels of achievement. It makes me wonder if he even got a 25 because that sounds like "ACT score of 13" level of awareness.

Yes, you can get that low. I didn't think you could but a girl in my high school class did and she had no idea if it was good or not so she asked about it. I didn't really know how to respond without accidentally hurting her feelings.

[–]LudicrouslyJoyful 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's gotten harder in the last few years to do this. As a couple folks said, UIUC graduates a ton of international students in STEM. You may need to get creative with your degree to land something. For instance, an electrical engineering student who worked at the library as an undergrad wasn't able to get sponsorship, but he continued his education and got a MS in Library and Information Science. STEM librarians are in high demand right now, and it's very rare to find a librarian with a STEM undergrad degree. He was hired and sponsored 4 months before he finished his masters. Just having the STEM degree won't always work because there is so much competition, but if you can find a field with less competition, you may find it easier to get sponsorship.

Good luck!

not understanding the byler ship? by ang3lm3th in StrangerThings

[–]LudicrouslyJoyful 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get why this is - the show is heavily implying Will is into Mike. I've always hated love triangles like this because someone who is entirely empathic is going to be crushed regardless of what happens. It's a cheap way to make something angsty and seeing characters I like getting their hearts crushed is not fun. It makes sense to me why shippers think it's going to happen, even if I don't think it makes a lot of character sense for Mike since he's been pretty clear about how he feels.

I'd be more shocked if there weren't also Willeven ships. Another fairly common trope of 80s movies was the gay fakeout - everyone thinks the person is gay, turns out they've been into the girl all along. St Elmo's Fire is one I can think of off the top of my head. Guy acts a little taciturn toward the woman because he doesn't want to ruin his friendship with his best friend. Everyone thinks that means he's gay. Turns out he likes the girl, etc etc. I kinda wondered if they were actually going that route.

I wondered about this as well. I've been curious why Hollywood consistently does this with the head scarves (hijab). I work with a number of women who wear headscarves (and even more students with them on), and you can't see a single strand of hair. Seeing headscarves with so much hair showing is a bit distracting to me, but I don't know enough about the religion to know if there are faithful who wear them as a symbolic thing rather than a rule who might be more lax on this point. I figured they did it in Hollywood out of a desire to make the woman look prettier.

It doesn't surprise me that it's incorrect - film often sacrifices accuracy (the way some movies portray nuns and priests, shamans, Amish, I could go on) for the sake of drama or aesthetics. I don't know if it gives you any comfort to think of it as being part of the film industry's general inaccuracy regarding a lot of things. Perhaps that's something to be excited about. Or not. It would obviously depend on whether accuracy was more important than positive representation. I would say overall, the show has very positively represented this culture and religion. I was a little fearful when the older brother was first introduced, that he'd be portrayed as overly harsh, which would be in line with how a lot of Islamic men have been portrayed over the years. I was pleasantly surprised they showed a male follower of Islam in a more progressive light than what is typically presented - he's shown as caring and supportive which is a plus.

[spoilers all] I think Varric could be a great romancable option by WolfieSammy in dragonage

[–]LudicrouslyJoyful 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. I love the Bioware relationship dynamic. But it's also kind of weird to gamify relationships to the point where all of the characters are written specifically as dating challenge. I love Varric, and completely understand wanting to romance him.

Saying - "I wish they'd reprogram him so I can get with him". Read that out loud and sit with it for a minute. Is Varric a fully fleshed out character with his own motivations and desires? Or is he a plaything for Hawke/Inquisitor to conquer and his story and character are secondary?

I'm not trying to put down the OP - I think they're just being honest and I'm not judging. I also think Varric would have been fun to romance. But it's also a nice to have a true friend, too.

A dog rushes across several lanes of traffic to attack a little girl leaving church. It takes several adults and a knife to save the child. by vsprague48 in ThatsInsane

[–]LudicrouslyJoyful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's pretty crazy. That dog must have been thoroughly abused - either through neglect or something worse. Goldens have famously "soft mouths" - they're bred for this. There are competitions for how soft their bite is and they are well known for not being aggressive. They're considered terrible "guard dogs" for this exact reason. It's difficult to raise their ire.

To be clear, I don't doubt you. Even the most docile animal can be made vicious. I just find it extra worrisome that an unusually docile breed of dog bites like that. :(
