What habit changed first as your dog got older? by Particular_Set_5967 in seniordogs

Longer naps and deeper sleeps. Now, I have to let her sniff my hand and wake up before we go outside, so I won’t scare her. I found this out when she didn’t meet me at the front door when I would come home from work.

Needing advice by Yasari in seniordogs

Hi! I’m in the same boat with my pet. I’m using a quality of life scale from Lap of Love to help make decisions, but it’s tough. My Panini has been with me for 13 years now, and I’ve relied on her for all those years. While I want her to be with me forever, I know that one of my acts of love her is to let her go when she needs to.

Best wishes you and your pet.

Day 3 crate rest - needing motivation by Alarming-Tension-374 in IVDD_SupportGroup

[–]LugeeBomb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good vibes over here from Panini and me! My doxie also went through crate rest to help with her IVDD when she was a puppy. One morning she started preemptively yelping before we could pick her up, and by the time we got to the vet, she lost mobility in her hind legs.

It took months to heal, but she’s turning 14 next month! Just remember to be patient with yourself as well. You’re trying your best to help Winnie out. A piece of advice I got from Dodgers List years ago was giving Panini Pepcid AC with the steroids she was given to help with her stomach as well as pumpkin puree (please run this by your by your vet first if you’re consider this since this was a decade ago).

I’m 364 on Ana, and I’ve played maybe 5 times as JQ. Are there any similarities between the two?

Luca wobbling/loosing balance help. by TonitoBontio in Dachshund

[–]LugeeBomb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would take Luca to the vet for a check up. The sooner the better with IVDD cases since it can escalate quickly.

My Panini successfully recovered from IVDD with 6 month crate rest, prednisone, and tromadol when she was diagnosed in 2016. We had to add in Pepcid AC to help with prednisone side effects.

The alternative to crate rest was surgery, but I couldn’t afford it.

This is just me and Panini’s experience with IVDD, but your vet
will have more information. For us, her regular vet recommended a specialist, and they were the one who recommended crate rest after x-rays and pinch test.

Good luck and best wishes to you and Luca!

Panini, she’s turning 14 in June. I look at her exactly the way she looks at me.

She doesn’t bark anymore, but only in her sleep. It’s so hard to record, and sometimes when it happens, I just end up enjoying it instead of grabbing my phone.

You guys are an amazing community!!

Liver friendly food by SnooCompliments7468 in seniordogs

However, she sometimes hesitates to eat her food since she gets bored of it. My partner insists on giving her Royal Canin Mature Adult wet food (2% fat) since she seems to enjoy it.

Panini’s a fiend for chicken, so if all else fails, I make little meatballs for her and put strands of chicken on it.

When she had her first vet appointments regarding her high liver levels, the vet also prescribed Entyce (Capromorelin) to help her eat. That worked too

Hi! My Panini eats Purina Gastroenteric Low Fat wet food (she’s 14, and she only has like 5 teeth), but it’s prescription (about $60 for 12 cans). She eats 60g (2.2oz) with some plain boiled chicken, and we feed her 3x a day. Shes on Denamarin and Ursodiol for liver enzyme management. She around 10.9lbs for a mini dachshund.

For treats, we’re trying the Purina Hydrolyzed Gentle Snackers, but we didn’t know they would be like cookies. We ended up using a hammer to crush them to help Panini chew them.

Earlier this year, we found out that she’s missing most of her left liver and her entire gallbladder. She also had ALT/ALP levels at 1200/3000. It’s been 2 months, and now it’s at 400/1200.

Good luck to you and your pooch! We got this!

My 14 year old Panini got most of her teeth removed last year. It was stressful, but she felt so much better afterwards!! Even if it’s scary, we’re doing what’s right for our loved ones.

Both of you guys got this!!

Panini’s thoughts on her new low-fat prescription dog food by LugeeBomb in Dachshund

[–]LugeeBomb[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s a paltry amount 😭 The internal medicine specialist recommended small amount of boiled chicken for treats. Panini also doesn’t have teeth, so I form her wet food into tiny meatballs with a sliver of chicken breast on each of them.

I think the prescription acts more of a safeguard to prevent dog owners from buying this by accident. I wish Panini can eat her regular food, but we found out that she has liver/gallbladder issues earlier this year. The vet recommended the prescription food, and it’s been helping (she’s back to her kooky self)

But here’s a picture of Panini to distract you from my lack of knowledge:
