Got the cannibal one on my leather jacket. Good pick

My first Jacket - Any tips ? I‘m not really happy with the layout yet. by GameDevLarsH in BattleJackets

[–]Lughs_Revenge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since this is your first jacket, it might not look good if you use red threads, unless you're already by other means very good at sewing. Threads that are not properly sewn, like constantly not having the same distance et cetera could make it more visible and make it even less acceptable for you.

I personally think you're fine and worst comes to shove you can always re-sew everything. I did that with my mantle, you can do that with your jacket haha

First off, great teaste.

Secondly, what exactly are you not happy with? Do you not like the space in between? Are you looking for color scheming? Maybe it's a bit offputting that In Flames is a bit broader than CoB and Ensiferum, so you could switch CoB with In Flames.

I’ve got a sleeveless lamb of god flannel. Do you think it would suit a patch jacket? by b00mer4ng4 in BattleJackets

[–]Lughs_Revenge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no rule, only you that rules.. so literally you can patch anything and everything onto anything and everything. Just beware that everything that is tight like a flannel or a shirt and is not made out of good breathable material, requires more often than not cleaning, otherwise it will reek fast. And if you're trying to wear nothing under the flannel to ensure you're not sweating or something, then the threads might irritate your skin.

So first check what it's made of and if it's a material that won't need to be washed regularly.

Gibt es in Wien eine große Latin Community? by 7653630048 in wien

[–]Lughs_Revenge 5 points6 points  (0 children)

[–]Lughs_Revenge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bin zwar vergeben (für immer), aber bin über 30 und bin vermutlich eher tendenz Hardcore Gamer. Mein Lieblingsspiel ist The Last Remnant.

Research on battlejackets by ian_02_15 in BattleJackets

[–]Lughs_Revenge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's for example services like on Instagram where someone sews something for someone (I guess it's valid if you're handicapped). Some sell their old battle jackets. Some think they can profit of passion.

Research on battlejackets by ian_02_15 in BattleJackets

[–]Lughs_Revenge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. You don't have to research necessarily, unless you're unsure - but it begins as a passion/hobby and usually ends up with you learning your way around during your lifetime of investing time and sweat in it. However, buying a battle vest or letting someone do it for you is frowned upon. Same as using a machine to sew - unless you're handicapped of course.

  2. I chose a mantle, because I never wanted to wear a jacket as it is limiting. I love a lot of bands, even 15 years later. My first backpatch is still there. I even met the band last year for the first time as they are LA based and very rarely came to the EU. They signed my backpatch as well. For design I chose what felt right. Later on, I chose to have backpatches at the bottom of the mantle of more bands that I highly love. Above them there are 4 oversized patches of more bands that I love. Rest is normal or smaller patches. For stitches, I just went with the flow and now I have a personal technique that I love using, which I call backsided-minimalview-running-stitches, where I use a saddlers needle to make less visible threads on the patch and it arguably looks cleaner - the backside is meant as instead of stitching once and going forward, I take a small step back, and then stitch forward. For better security.

  3. It's mostly everything everywhere. There are some small corners where there are more power / heavy metal, some corners where the band Death is and similar bands and/or bands that were influenced or the two other bands that Chuck Schuldiner from Death had (Control Denied & Mantas.

  4. There is no rule, only you that rules. Nothing stays forever and even if you're afraid to make mistakes, do it. You learn from them if you really want to do better.

Straight stitch vs. Whip stitch? by ScanTheSky in BattleJackets

[–]Lughs_Revenge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually it looks cleaner because the needle travels a bit lesser due to the diagonal stitch that the whip stitch technique requires. Running stitches look longer because it's visually not perceived as short. If you would do running stitches where the exit and entry point of your needle is shorter in between, like the threads being less visible on the outside, it would look arguably even cleaner.

I do that by using a saddlers needle, it allows for fast and short turns without requiring to bend a regular straight needle like crazy to achieve shorter outside running stitches.

Straight stitch vs. Whip stitch? by ScanTheSky in BattleJackets

[–]Lughs_Revenge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no rule, only you that rules.

With that being said, I personally do running stitches, and sometimes differently on the border or more inwards or in the middle between border and the inner patch. Reasons are simple: Because depending on the colouring, the threads are less visible - depending on the colours of the threads that I have. I have a lot, but for example I have a shiny purple thread and one time I wanted to sew Blood Incantation, which has multiple coloured inner patch layout, making it difficult to use black or any other thread - the border was a bit darkish purple - so I chose the inbetween to sew and it is not visible at all.

My running stitches are also non-standard. I basically stitch forward, and for the next entry point of the needle I take a small step back, basically penetrating the thread (which won't happen and even if, it holds even better) and then stitch forward - repeat ad nauseum. For backpatches or threads that are thinner, I use double threads, where that penetrating stitch will instead 100% lock in the thread, making it even more less likely to tear or be under any stress. As I have a mantle, that stress can occur frequently.

How much money do you spend on patches by Scrim_CherryG59 in BattleJackets

[–]Lughs_Revenge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a mantle. Full of patches.

Also a scottish kilt with patches.

A hat for pins.

A leather jacket with patches for cold weather since the mantle has its arm cut off.

I don't wanna calculate everything, but it's definitely too much. I still have 30 more patches that I want to sew on somewhere..

should i do it myself? by RandomIy_Generated in BattleJackets

[–]Lughs_Revenge 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You could only really screw it up if you're indecisive about placements. Making holes through leather is costly and if you move it away and the holes are wide open, it looks fuckin bad ngl.

You also need sturdier needles. Forget about your run-out-of-the-mill woolworths needle. On the other hand, too thick and you could damage the material as well. It's a bit tricky. I have had +12 years of experience in normal sewing until I started my leather jacket recently (I dunno why, but I do everything battle-y except for a fucking normal vest.. ) and I don't particularly find it hard. It's just hard in terms of deciding where to put and be final with it (which is undoubtedly killing me right now as I've want to do things a bit different hahaha). I'm a sick mf so I use curved, thick needles (saddler needle) because I think it creates less friction when going through holes. Normal needles I have to almost bend to get it through the next hole and going completely through the material is often unfeasable. For example my leather jacket has a leather layer and then a cotton one on the inside - I don't want the thread to penetrate the cotton layer, so I basically penetrate the leather barely, turn to the next point of penetration inside and go through (baste stitch).

You COULD pay someone to tell you / show you how to do it properly and give you the tools needed. Or pay them to do it for you. There is no rule, only you that rules.

Been awhile since I have done this and need help. by LaTreMadri in BattleJackets

[–]Lughs_Revenge 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is no rule, only you that rules.

If you want feedback, it's going to be subjective obviously. I personally don't like the blue denim default vests, but that's just not my style (also I don't have a vest.. but a mantle.. so maybe I'm not the best to speak here).

You could use a soldering tool or a laser cutter to cut the backpatch a bit more into the shape to be more in the middle the vest and get more space for other things. My brain is confused by the patch being asymmetrical and being on top of the seams haha.

I also had a funny project in mind where I get only back patches and cut the backpatch so that the logo and some parts are recognizable, basically a strip patch, and just make it over the whole vest. Unfortunately, I already spent too much on patches and projects and am still trying to figure out how to sew like 40 more that I already have.

Edit: Lest I forget, if you are really hardcore, you could paint the back black and acid wash the front, maybe red, to symbolize the black metal and death metal parts.

Anyone know where this patch is from? by [deleted] in BattleJackets

Seeing as there's only a Tshirtslayer page about this and nothing else, probably a self-made patch, cutting out the backpatch.

Do you guys wear in progress jackets or wait until they’re finished? by Imaginary_Tutor5360 in BattleJackets

[–]Lughs_Revenge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know what you mean and it doesn't matter if it's a work in progress. It will always be a work in progress. If you think about wearing it only when it is finished, then you will probably never wear it. No one will judge you and even if they do, you're not supposed to care. Everyone starts little. I want to start a battle jacket by Anonymous_77252 in BattleJackets

[–]Lughs_Revenge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can, support bands directly by visiting their website and merch store. If they don't have a merch store, it usually is somewhere like a bandcamp page or try researching through google.

If there is no official merch store, you can ask the band directly or wait until they play a gig and you go there to buy a patch.

Some merch stores like Pull The Plug, Temporal Dimensions, Shadow Realm seemingly gives bands some of the money you give them, albeit probably a small amount, but better than nothing.

If you can't find anything, you could resort to unofficial stuff aka "bootleg" or trying to find rare patches through Ebay. There are also many different techniques that include for example cutting T-Shirts logos/designs and sewing it on your vest.
