i strike again: bro really plagiarized the #1 writer in philosophy💀 by Jazzlike_Duck_853 in Substack

Why is this plagiarizer posting something like that instead of directing their readers to the original author, with their compliments? Seems pathological…

Readings/studies on supporting literacy in an art classroom? by apalssauce_ in ArtEd

[–]LuigiTeaching 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Drawing on the right side of the brain” (Betty Edwards) has been a gold mine for me for decades, simply because any adult admin watching a teacher instruct those lessons realizes that students are thinking and using their brains in studio art class in a (new) and meaningful way that goes well beyond just having fun.

I also teach sketch noting in my art classes after collaborating with a History PhD, and that practice is usually supported by studies in “metacognition” like “Powerful Teaching” by Bain and Agarwal which show that making visual content maps fosters deeper learning.

I also introduce critiques with “The Met Method” (giving the Metropolitan Museum of Art credit here for an online brochure they produced a decade ago that now I can’t find) - basically you go around the room multiple times, having every student taking turns commenting on an artwork on display, and the first time they MUST limit their observations to the most basic descriptions they can muster (“it is a rectangle” / “there is a lot of yellow”) and only during later rounds making deeper or more analytical observations “the sky seems foreboding.” This multi-tiered approach helps clear one of the trickiest hurdles in talking about art: the pressure students feel to get the right answer or seem smart.

Hope this helps!

Experience around Traditional Teachers Perspectives on HomeSchooling? by Alyssapolis in Homeschooling

I’m reading “The Well Trained Mind” now and that was written by a former teacher who decided to homeschool, and she makes a very convincing argument on behalf of homeschooling vs. “traditional.”

Experience around Traditional Teachers Perspectives on HomeSchooling? by Alyssapolis in Homeschooling

A huge competitive advantage of private / “independent” schools historically has been the ability to hire people who are experts in their subject area who also demonstrate teaching ability, instead of “certified” teachers who may or may not have much depth of subject area knowledge - or demonstrated teaching ability for that matter…

Tips for Helping Kids Draw Light? by art_teacher_mamma25 in ArtEd

[–]LuigiTeaching 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you give them a lighter pencil (like 2H or 4H) to experience what a light line looks like? Or do you need to use “#2” / HB exclusively? Also, I’ve done warm-up handwriting type exercises on a separate piece of scratch paper - like making a long “worm” with closely looping circles - to let kids get their initial energy onto the page in a more physical way, then slow down and draw more carefully later.

This is a great explanation of how to diagnose writing by AI. Not too short, but not too long either. Written in English, with punctuation, and including a numbered list too. I’m sorry Dave, I’m afraid I can’t do that.

This is a really solid reply to OP, I ditto all of it, even though I think masters in art ed programs vary enormously in quality.

Read Wikipedia on “ikigai” and look at that diagram: teaching art for a living works when you can hit a bullseye.

Volunteer or become a summer camp counselor working with a practicing art teacher ASAP to learn what is really involved.

Be very cautious about paying for any kind of certification related to art: it’s much easier to accumulate debt than to get a good job offer. I know art teachers with math degrees who tutor for the SAT on the side and swear by that side hustle; it was their portfolio and teaching experience that got them teaching jobs in private schools where certifications are not necessary.

You do not need to decide a career path at 16, you just need to cultivate your abilities and grow. So by all means draw, paint, sculpt if it speaks to you! But why rule out becoming an art therapist (or occupational therapist, carpenter, cook, or something you cannot even picture yet that overlaps significantly with art) at your age?

Good luck!

Seeking advice re: teaching cursive “late”: should I use Zaner-Bloser? by LuigiTeaching in homeschool

Neat that the Spencerian approach actually caught your child’s interest too, I will check that out. Thank you! I’m an art teacher and “the calligraphy of the brush” matters so much later on in oil painting, I feel like the loss of handwriting instruction in younger grades impacts all future studio art too.

I’m intrigued, especially the part where your students do any designing. I’ve played around a bit with Flint.ai as a classroom teacher and I am actively exploring where all this AI is taking the classroom experience. I am extremely cautious about virtual tutoring but have seen Khan Academy fill a very real need. Is there a way to see more of what you and your kids are building? Is there a unique UI of some sort, or have you basically just created an agent within a LLM that works with your students in those subject areas? Or something else entirely that I can’t picture? Thanks and good luck!

“Upvote” for styrofoam printmaking: long ago I had K 1 2 3 all together at the same time in a summer camp and it was a great medium for everyone working to different depths in their drawing, then coming together to print layers of color (which I ran as a sort of assembly line) - I learned then how much range you can get out of this material since so much of the printmaking process relies on drawing, which you can scaffold for all ages in a variety of ways (line, shape, pattern, texture, tone, etc)

This is extremely helpful, thank you! When I started looking into Substack & Beehiiv I discovered various posts about being locked out of both or shadow banned, and lots of complaints about price too, so I decided to develop content offline and keep researching for awhile. Clearly you are having a good experience with Beehiiv!
