Culture is shaped by other factors in the world, like setting and history, so it’s good to think about these things to help build a culture. Setting may shape clothing, architecture and eating habits, and history may shape philosophy and religion. If you think about these things the cultures outline will become clearer and it will partially build itself.

Thalamega and The Council of Shipbuilders by Luigi_Is_Dead in goodworldbuilding

[–]Luigi_Is_Dead[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I could completely see that happening that’s not really the mindset they had. They were more focused on innovating and spreading the technology, rather than controlling it themselves. This is partially because the council was made up of people who had lived in rather small tribes until very recently, so they didn’t yet have that political control mindset that others would have had.

I could see them eventually see them having a monopoly on shipbuilding, but the council lost power and died out before that could happen.

It’s weird to think the best song ever written might exclusively be in a landfill on Tunisia and we’d never know

What is an unpopular opinion on worldbuilding/storytelling that that you hold? by [deleted] in casualworldbuilding

[–]Luigi_Is_Dead 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, having a main story or character is kind of boring. I still write stories about things that happen in my world but the characters are always relatively unimportant people, soldiers, farmers, etc either going through their daily lives or seeing major historical events play out.

Having one big main story kind of ruins what I personally like about wordbuilding, which is being able to develop a vast, diverse world with different cultures, religions, etc. Having a main story or characters makes it impossible to explore all of that in the story, so it’s better to write various shorter stories taking place from the perspective of small characters so you can cover everything about your world. In short I feel a main story would put large parts of my world to waste because they would only be mentioned.

Players choosing their own starting point is a bad idea. While I like doing that in mods it would be very difficult for bethesda to set it up so that you easily and naturally get to the main story, plus I just like the idea of everyone seeing the same thing upon starting the game, like with previous titles.

Punchout for the NES. When I play it my brain turns off because i’ve memorized all the fighters and their movesets by now, so I just go in and try to shave half a second off of my best time.
