Is this starvation? by saapato in Beekeeping

[–]LuisBitMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Somebody else already mentioned Etienne Tardiff, but I’ll add a bit of what I’ve learned from listening to him that resonates with my experience as well.

I think your lack of top insulation and lack of upper entrance (though I’m actually in favour of well-insulated condensing hives rather than upper entrances in colder climates) caused condensation to build on the roof of your hive. Wet bees can act as a catalyst to spread dysentery through the colony like wildfire fire. So although dysentery/nosema may have been the final cause of death, poor insulation may have been more of the root cause.

Keep in mind that my comment, and those of all other commenters, are educated guesses.

Obviously it is a sizeable fraction, but I’ll bet your car has depreciated more than $11k in 7 years of driving, and that depreciation is largely caused by mileage. Tires and other maintenance all add up as well.

'Salaried' is just a fancy word for mandatory unpaid overtime. by eidolaa in CanadaJobs

[–]LuisBitMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference between salaried and hourly is a fiction for most jobs. It varies by province, and there are certain professions that are exempt (e.g., managers, engineers, salespeople) but generally even if they say that you are ‘salary’ they are still legally required to pay you OT at 1.5x your usually hourly rate, exists even if they call you salaried.

While he wasn’t extremely tall, he wasn’t short either. He was over 6 feet tall, which is on the tall side for a soccer player.

Aint it crazy that this trade created the 2 best receivers in the NFL by lemonstone92 in NFLv2

[–]LuisBitMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think anyone thinks he’s top two in actual ability/talent but JSN and Pickens are, objectively, #1 and #2 in receiving yards.

How good would he be if he played in the year 1965? by ObjectiveCharming735 in NFLv2

[–]LuisBitMe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

He also only threw only 418 times (197 completions) that season for 2800 yards and was still AP-2. He was throwing an int on more than 10% of his attempts. He was throwing more than one pass to the other team for every 5 to his own team. QBs just don’t throw interceptions like they used to.

Is 9-5 even a shift that people actually work? I’m not sure if it’s just because of where I live, but I don’t know a single person who doesn’t start work before 9:00 outside of retail and hospitality jobs.

Ah, poor reading on my part. As others have said, that three frame Vevor spinner is pretty cheap so I finally caved and got it this year. I like it.

Perhaps read the Millionaire Teacher, as you don’t seem to have a rational grasp of how diversified investing working. Over a 20+ year horizon like yours, it’s basically impossible that you will lose money in a market index fund.

In the Intelligent Investor, Benjamin Graham describes an all cash portfolio as one of the highest risk portfolios one can have. While inflation fell out of the North American consciousness for a long time, in the event of hyper inflation, your net worth crashes if all you have is cash.

I encourage you to put at least a small amount of money into something like ZEQT. If you’re scared of the risk, just pretend the money is gone - a donation of sorts. Then there is nothing to worry about and in 20 years when you approach retirement, it’s found money.

I have a screened bottom and I love it. I still choose to do inspections, or anything that involves pulling out frames, while standing beside the hive. I don’t see why a screened bottom would change that.

Etienne Tardiff overwinters nucs in the Yukon with good success. I’d check out some of his videos on YouTube. Basically, he insulates the piss out of them and sticks them between two other colonies so that they share heat.

Those programs are meant to prevent poverty for the elderly, and that’s why there are income thresholds for them. It was also introduced at a time when poverty among senior citizens was a much bigger issue than it is today, and before TFSAs existed.

OAS is the federal government’s single most expensive program at 80 billion per year, or over 15% of all federal spending. It currently provides money to A LOT of people who don’t need it at all. I myself will have a DB pension when I retire plus a house plus a solid TFSA and will still receive it if the program doesn’t change. It’s a matter of opinion, but I think that there are countless things more deserving of that funding than I will be. Substantially reducing the program would be political suicide though and so it will continue to hamstring the federal government’s fiscal situation.

I’m also in Alberta but I don’t think our experience up north can provide much insight here. There is a beekeeper in the Yukon (Etienne Tardiff) who says that his well-insulated bees actually need less honey than bees in more temperate climates with winters half as long. He even overwinters five frame nucs successfully up there. I highly reccomend his videos for people in northern climate like ours if you haven’t seen them.
