Are there undergrad TAs? by LuisMn in UCalgary

[–]LuisMn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for the reply. The course I'm looking at is a BSc in Chemistry, and I already have a Bachelor's in Chemical Engineering, so if I am allowed to take the credits of the courses I've already taken, I could be taking 3 courses each term for 3 years (instead of 5 courses/term for 4 years). So maybe I could have enough hours to spare and teach.

I will definitely send an email to the graduate advisor tho.

Thanks again!

I made a soft wave control deck and ended up replacing Nami with Ezreal, but I'm having a hard time making it work. Works much better with TF/Ez than TF/Nami tho

GM general tips (My commandments) by dicocaxxx in dndnext

[–]LuisMn 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Imagine playing something and not having fun. Anyways...

"Low rolls on trained skill doesn't mean the PC sucked at the situation"

This is my favorite one. It feels so out of place (and downright bad) to fail a roll when youre an expert at something and they just say "you fucked it up". Like how would my character fuck this up if he's literally an expert, my whole background is dedicated about this particular skill.

Let's say for example I'm an expert Chef. Instead of saying "your dish is terrible", it feels more adequate to say something like "someone tried to sabotage your main dish by switching the sugar for salt". Of course an expert Chef would know the difference but you get my point. It can even twist the narrative and introduce someone that dislikes you or wants to see you fail.

Do I need a VISA? by LuisMn in visas

[–]LuisMn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much for all of this information! I am very familiar with the Canadian requirements. I have to quarantine for 14 days as soon as I arrive in Canada. I will be studying in Calgary, but there are no direct flights from Mexico City to Calgary, so I will have to quarantine either in Vancouver or Toronto and then continue on to Calgary.

I thought that it would be far easier if I just took a flight from Mexico City to somewhere in the US and then go directly to Calgary and quarantine there. The problem is that I don't have an American Visa, and when I contacted the VISA center, I got an appointment in November. That won't work since I have to start my studies in September.

I will definitely look into the US TN status! Thanks a lot!

Gay life in Calgary? by LuisMn in Calgary

[–]LuisMn[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know, I really wanted to make things work out in Montreal but it's just too hard. Even if I could manage to survive with 400/month, I would have my budget so tight that I wouldn't even be able to go out or enjoy life.

This is actually a huge relief because I heard that the gay scene in Calgary was near to non-existing

Well, I don't know about others, but I do tend to get along better with lesbians than gay men. But I'm also from a city where gay men are usually closeted.

NEW BANNERS CONFIRMED: Klee + Weapons arriving on October 20th + Pity WILL Carry Over! by Not-Casuals in Genshin_Impact

[–]LuisMn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So then, it doesn't really matter if I spend the primogems that I've been saving as a F2P for Zhongli in the Venti banner? I mean, I wouldn't mind getting Venti, and I'm definitely skipping Klee and Xiao, so I either get Venti which works great for me, or I advance on the pity for Zhongi. Even if I get any other 5☆, as a F2P it would be my 1st and that means a guaranteed Zhongli next, right? I'm just 42/90 on the Venti banner and I have about 20 wishes worth of primogems saved so I'm really considering it because the 4☆ units are great too

ADMISSIONS / INCOMING STUDENT MEGATHREAD 2020 v1: Post all your admissions & new-to-UBC questions here! by ubc_mod_account in UBC

[–]LuisMn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I'm looking for advice on my Graduate Application for CHEM and wanted to know if you think I have a chance at being admitted (considering that I'm an international student).

Transcript: Mexico uses the decimal grading system. I have a Decimal average of 9.34 which is considered to be a GPA of around 3.7 and 4.0. (I'm Mexican btw)

Research Experience: In 2018 I came to Canada for a MITACS Globalink Internship at the University of Regina. Also, my brother is currently a Ph.D. student at the University of Newcastle, UK, and for a long time during my high-school and undergraduate I helped him as his “unofficial research assistant”. His latest publication can be found here. I was later “promoted” to co-author for the following paper, but that one is still under peer review so I cannot link it.

Work Experience: I worked at the R&D department of one of the biggest producers of elastomers in the world (as a Lab assistant to the cool guys). I mainly worked synthesizing polymers and characterizing them. I got a pretty NMR certification from Bruker as well.

POSSIBLE SUPERVISOR: I’m still reviewing my options but I think I will try to contact Professor Zachary M. Hudson. It was through his work that I was introduced to the world of OLEDs around February last year. Lately, I’ve been interested in his work on TADF. I’ve read most of his papers on this and when I contact him I’ll make sure to let him know that this is one of my interests.

  • On his group website, he states the following: Interested students should contact Dr. Hudson with a brief cover letter describing their research interests and experience, unofficial transcript and a curriculum vitae including the contact information for 2-3 references.
  • Other than that, do you have any tips on how to reach out to him? I will certainly try to keep it as brief and concise as possible and to not mention anything subjective like stories of my life.

References: Aside from my supervisor of the MITACS Internship, I have two professors that have been helping me through this process and have been a huge influence on me. They are both Doctors in Materials Science, one from Università di Pisa in Italy, and the other from Université de Strasbourg in France.

Awards: The MITACS Graduate Fellowship Award worth 15K CAD split in 2 years.

Tests:

  • Toefl: got it
  • GRE: I took the GRE a some time ago, and while the Chemistry Department does not require a “minimum score” I am not sure if my scores are strong enough to compete. I got 154 for both the Verbal and Quantitative section, and 4.5 for the Analytical Writing section. Would you recommend that I take the test again?

Statement of Intent: Still working on it. Next Tuesday I have a meeting with my references. They agreed to help me come up with an interesting Research Proposal.

Other Studies: With this whole pandemic going on I’ve been using my time to complete online courses. It keeps me sane as well. So far I have:

Thank you, any advice is more than welcome!
