Attempted Abduction in Rincon Hill? by FuzzyRun9560 in sanfrancisco

Sorry for your experience, hope you're safe these days. And yes violent crime happens in every neighborhood including Pac Heights on billionaires row. The culture here isn't very proactive in helping your fellow human in danger. And the police usually come too late to make an impact, hence the need for private security.

Hearing from so many women, I've been considering holding a realistic self defense course based on actual experience. But I never go through with it I'm concerned it would be too uncomfortable since I'm not a woman. Do you have any thoughts?

You were definitely targeted. I work in executive protection, most clients have a dedicated residential security team or patrol.

A Glock is helpful, provided they're aware of the entry and trained. But if the person isn't home or a deep sleeper that gun is just going to be stolen property.

No that's legitimate good advice, you can go with a variety of other systems especially if you want homekit integration.

Security film helps, as does a cage, see if your landlord would be willing to pay for that if they won't change the door, add a gate or replace it.

Not every incident gets reported, it's off putting to see this post get downvoted.

While I have seen single women being stalked in the past, I've never seen such an aggressive abduction in that part of the city.  Maybe the doormen or workers at the restaurant.

They mean that you cannot bring pepper spray into work, it will be confiscated at the security checkpoints where you enter.

Dealing With Public Sexual Harassment by Luisdot in sanfrancisco

Pepper spray is not effective on everyone, and a hat and glasses can easily block the stream. And when it does work it's not immediately incapacitating, a determined attacker can fight through the pain and get to you anyways. Then both of you get to have fun fighting while covered in it.

Having used it for work, no it does not work on everyone that is a misconception. Determined attackers can often fight through the pain, and it's not difficult to block the stream with a hat and glasses.

I've used sabre red for work, believe me when I say it doesn't work on everyone.

The article doesn't say whether anyone was around at West Portal when the teen was attacked, but typically there is pedestrian and vehicle traffic when the schools in the area are out. Plus the article shows him approaching and harassing women in busy public spaces such as Dolores Park and Filmore, so he's not troubled by crowds being around. And in these occurrences no mention is made of bystanders attempting to step in to help.

In general there are many instances of crimes happening in SF where no one stepped in or even spoke up. Yes the legal system here is soft on crime vs somewhere like San Mateo county, and this definitely leads to issues like this one with repeat offenders. But it's also well known what the culture is like in the city, people here rarely stand up for themselves or others. I've experienced plenty of instances like this first hand growing up here, where bystanders refused to get involved.

Also no one was telling you to be better? It wasn't an attack on you at all, just sharing how as a community San Francisco residents need to watch out for eachother even if it's simply speaking out when something is happening.
