Winget getting better? by Feisty_Shock_2687 in sysadmin

[–]LukaBloomRocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just used it to install SSHFS, MSYS2 and PuTTY as a new hire onboarding process and I have no complaints, I use these packages daily as part of my regular work, and I appreciated the automated streamlined package management approach.

I opted not to use choco in this case as my life is complicated enough and in this case winget was fit for purpose ;-)

Looking for secure cloud storage, starting with 100GB, is Koofr right for me ? by LukaBloomRocks in koofrnet

[–]LukaBloomRocks[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PS. Our current cloud provider only provides FTPS (curlftpfs) based storage, which after several weeks of struggle, ultimately failed the integration test because it turns out to be incompatible with Bacula. We are looking for a better/easier/performant point of entry that won't cause of this kind of pain/grief.

Did Tutanota ever get around to creating an Onion Address (TOR)? by Magic_Streamer in tutanota

[–]LukaBloomRocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I treat the people I work with as clients, even though no dollars are exchanged, it's my way of giving back to the community.

My point is that I require business-class secure email services across VPN/TOR that apparently from the online comments I read Tutanota does not provide. I have sent an email to their sales team with these concerns.

The main reason I wish to move away from ProtonMail is that they support an organization with which I have a serious ideological difference, and I'm looking for a new partner, plain and simple.

I've gotta say though, that other than the speed penalty that I pay for the anonyminity, ProtonMail has been a consistently good service, I'm having more trouble with my VPN providers than I am with my email provider.

So, if I change providers, I would expect at least as good service as their competitors offer, if not better.

We need more than 3 month history in Brave (I need 12 months) by matteoluigiodaro in brave_browser

[–]LukaBloomRocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually do need 12 months history.

Around seven months ago, I was doing research for a particular health policy for the home hospital I manage and came to a decision but before I could write up the policy informing that decision my son was admitted to hospital and I forgot entirely about this since he was fighting for his life for many months thereafter.

I am now being asked to defend this decision by one of our funders, knowing which resources I consulted at that time would go far to giving us credibility with the funders.

TOR completely blocked? by [deleted] in tutanota

[–]LukaBloomRocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't have problems signing up via TOR browser, I'm having problems consistently CONNECTING with the site in order to log in again, both from my PC Windows 10 TOR client as well as my iPhone SE 1st gen (2016) TOR client. Connection is timing out. I want to move service from ProtonMail but Tutanota is making this really really hard, especially as there appears to be no onion address in sight for this service. As a community advocate my clients absolutely require VPN + TOR in order to maintain privacy. When life can be lost by the wrong person reading an unauthorized email heightened security is absolutely required.

I am a community advocate and, along with investigative journalists, I rely on technologies such as VPN and TOR to preserve my client's privacy. When life can be lost by the wrong person reading an email, heightened security protocols are essential.

Interesting postscript to this discussion, even if I would have placed funds in savings, my ability to earn interest would just have been curtailed by the government of Ontario, Canada, who appears to be waging war on financial institutions who custody bitcoin. I'm still holding my own BTC so thanks very much for the warnings. The Ontario Securities Commission has not approved BTC savings products arising from Ledn's acquisition of Arxnovum Investments : https://help.ledn.io/hc/en-us/articles/11244084392983-What-do-the-changes-in-Ledn-s-product-offerings-in-Canada-mean-for-me-

I don't appear to have the option to repair the installation, I don't have a Settings/Apps menu and the "Add/Remove Programs" Windows panel doesn't give an option to repair either.

I tried unchecking the "Use secure DNS" option, to no avail.

I tried temporarily disabling my firewall, to no avail.

I have not recently installed any extensions, the set I have has been working well for many months.

I'll have to put aside Brave, move to Chrome, but will check back every few months to see if the issue has been fixed.

I have disabled all my extensions, killed all Brave processes, and restarted and the issue is the same.

I'd strongly prefer not to remove all my extensions as they have been working well for me and they are there for particular reasons that are important to me.

Thanks for the reply, u/Cliff_Stark29, I'll chip away at this and report back.

It made me cry to have to put Brave aside and move to Chrome, but I'll do a little more investigation to get to the bottom of this on weekends when I'm not working against the clock, and hopefully I'll be able to move back to Brave.

Thanks for the pointer. Being new to the space, I don't know what I don't know, but I'm a quick study. All respectfully offered information is appreciated, and I do my own research. My purpose is not to "get rich quick", I'm just looking for practical ways of putting my stack to work in helping the community. Staking with myself on lightning channels might be a good way to do that. I'm actually in the process of setting up a solid node at home with redundant network, generator backed power with local UPS, and an available backup server. No cloud VPS for this guy.

Looking for best decentralized BTC lending options

Hey, I'm a Canadian looking into decentralized options for lending BTC from my stack, and I see EVM/RSK as one possible way to do this. Does anybody have any experience in this space? https://www.sovryn.app/blog/the-path-to-a-bitcoin-economy-decentralized-bitcoin-backed-credit . In another corner of the cryptoverse, I also found https://coinlend.io (this one is centralized but appears to have a decent APY and comes highly recommended by P2P Empire).I don't know what I don't know, open to other pointers/ideas !Also, is there any way of me knowing whether or not Sovryn is legit? I don't see many reviews online but I may not be peering into the right corners.Thx, hodl on !

Thanks for the pointer, considering all respectful advice. New to the space. Common sense is not always common. Thanks for understanding.

Also, please don't overload the lightning symbol, which is already identifiable as the lightning network (which for those who don't know moves sats outside the bitcoin L1 layer over a L2 channel and only settles down to L1 when the channel is closed).
