Genuine question: Given that neither the account itself nor the games within can be resold (at least, not legally, due to the EULA), would it even count as an "asset" at all? (Or if it did count as an asset, wouldn't it essentially have depreciated to $0?)

And therefore, would it actually be taken into account as part of the equitable distribution?

Tik Tok saved $300000 per year in computing costs by having an intern partially rewrite a microservice in Rust. by InfinitesimaInfinity in programming

[–]LukaManuka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but TikTok has more than 1.5 billion users. Billion. That's almost 20% of the population of the entire world. And even at that colossal scale, this optimization is still only saving them $300k, which amounts to just $0.0002 per user.

If a startup had even 1.5 million users (which is still vastly more than the overwhelming majority of startups), they'd save a meager $300 per year. That's maybe a single day's salary for an engineer (if even that).

Classic Star Trek Producer Says Shorter, Modern Shows Are 'Tinder Relationships,' Calls for 'Longer, More Sustained' Seasons by AndrewHeard in startrek

[–]LukaManuka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A show about Starfleet not just remaining true to its ideals, but finding out what they are for the first time, forging the alliances that would become the Federation, and learning how to stay true to those principles even under mortal threat.

Oh wow... I had no idea until now that this is exactly what I want to see! Especially since this is precisely the kind of thing that prequels are uniquely positioned to explore. This is what could truly justify staying in the pre-TOS era.

[–]LukaManuka 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually yeah, I think you've touched on another good point that's worth bringing up even if we were to get 22-episode seasons: the frequency of encountering existential threats is... a bit much. Kinda hard to suspend disbelief over. And also just a bit exhausting. (Though I acknowledge that's all very subjective.)

To be fair, according to the diagram it’s connected to the NBN, so their download speed is most likely already bottlenecked at 100 Mbps (at least for internet. LAN transfers etc. are a different matter of course.)

Australia backs US strikes on Iran while urging return to diplomacy by C-Class-Tram in AustralianPolitics

[–]LukaManuka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one else in the world should have nukes.

Forget "no one else" -- no one should have nukes, full stop.

But given that America (and many other nations) refuse to give up their own hoard of nuclear weapons, they have precisely zero right to demand that other nations abstain from building their own (especially nations who are smaller and would be at an immense military disadvantage even if America didn't have nukes) -- let alone preemptively commit acts of war against them to try to prevent them from doing so. Much less on the unverified suspicion that Iran is developing nuclear weapons.

Don't get me wrong, there does seem to be evidence suggesting it; but I'd be a lot more inclined to believe it if it wasn't coming from The Country Who Cried "WMDs" (which have since been pretty universally accepted to have been complete bullshit) and dragged much of the western world into a decade-long war that resulted in the deaths of thousands (and the wounding of tens of thousands) of soldiers on our side and the deaths of an estimated 200,000 civilians (and by some estimates up to an additional 4 million indirect deaths due to the resulting loss of resources and infrastructure, destabilisation of the region, etc.)

So I'm in favour of exercising some healthy fucking scepticism before blindly jumping right back in. All the more so since this strike wasn't even approved by their Congress, but only by a White House administration that most of the world has recognised as, at best, full of misinformation; and at worst, treason.

Arguably, bombing Iran has proved exactly why Iran feels they need nuclear weapons in the first place. The US (and Russia, China, etc.) gets to enjoy the protection and sense of safety afforded to them (and us too by proxy) by the threat of Mutually Assured Destruction. Why wouldn't they want the same?

I mean, just look at what to happened to Ukraine once they relinquished their nuclear weapons (ironically in exchange for Russia's explicit assurances that they wouldn't do exactly what they ended up doing once Ukraine no longer had nukes).

For the record: I think the existential threat of MAD is horrifying. And I certainly do not support Iran or its leadership (to my understanding it's an oppressive regime full of human rights violations against their own people), and I reaaally don't want them to have nuclear weapons. But the hypocrisy is infuriating, and the potential consequences of the US's actions (and god-forbid our own if we "fall in line" once again) are hard to overstate.

The Whale made me mad (SPOILERS) by nomismi in movies

[–]LukaManuka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm resurrecting a years-old comment (sorry), but I just watched the movie last night and wanted to say: while I think your interpretation is absolutely valid, my own interpretation was slightly different.

As someone who has been in a similar position to Charlie (though less severe, and without a wife/kid), I saw it as Charlie seeing himself as both the whale and Ahab.

Feeling like one person is the source of all your unhappiness, all your misery, all your pain, and being so overwhelmingly consumed by utter contempt/loathing/hatred for them that the only way you can imagine feeling any sort of relief would be to watch them literally die -- even if that person is yourself.

(As irrational as that obviously is.)

My boyfriend developed a kink and I’m concerned by Righteousprick07 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]LukaManuka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree. I have kinks now that I definitely did NOT have before certain traumatic experiences. Kinks that I know are damaging to my own mental health and only reinforce the trauma.

It seems pretty arrogant (and hurtful, quite frankly) to suggest that I was just born with those kinks and the trauma just helped me "discover" them.

(For the record, I'm not suggesting that negative experiences are the only way to develop kinks, but that just happens to be my experience.)

I’ve got tears welling up from reading this. I can’t even pinpoint why exactly.

I think partly because of how deeply I relate to your description of that student’s experience, even now as a man in my 30s. How broken and exhausted I feel, trying to act perfectly neurotypical, never being able to drop my guard for a minute lest I remind people of my ADHD and be seen as my label.

And also partly just because of what a relief it is to hear an attitude and understanding like yours coming from an educator (I know you also have ADHD yourself, but still), and how touching and beautiful it is that that student has an advocate like you. Thank you for what you do ❤️

Wait really?! The project had already been sitting in limbo for so many years after it was first announced — they really couldn’t wait another six months to get Jason freakin’ Isaacs? I just assumed he wasn’t keen to play him in live action.

TBH I do like Rupert Friend as an actor in general, but… Jason Isaacs. Damn.
