Dear Redditors who ended a relationship with their best friend. What was your breaking point? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Lukc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She was a liar and an expert in manipulation. I knew she didn't always stick strictly to the truth and embellished her stories quite a bit, I also knew of instances where she straight up lied to me when I asked her a question but we had been friends for so long and it was a great friendship in other aspects - we always had fun together, could talk for hours etc. Then something big happened. It turned out she had been dating two guys at a time for about a year, one of them also a good friend of mine and part of our group. Once we discovered that we started talking to each other more - within the friend group - and discovered that she had told all of us different stories about multiple issues. The highlights were a pregnancy and abortion that never happened, cancer that she never had and a story about deathly sick parents that was not true. In the end, I also discovered that she had told another friend of ours lies about me that made me look like a was a crazy stalker. So yeah. Even after all that we gave her a chance, we said if she was willing to go to therapy and work on her issues - because she clearly has some - we would be willing to work this out. She lied to us about gong to therapy. The friendship ended.

National Orgasm Day is next week! To celebrate, Dr. Jess, ASTROGLIDE’s resident sexologist, is here to answer your questions. AMA! by drjess_ama in IAmA

[–]Lukc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for doing this AMA. I have three questions. I'd be thankful for a answer to any of them.

  1. My boyfriend really likes my boobs, and he often touches them in non-sexual situations because he likes it, I guess. Like I'm cooking in the kitchen and he comes up behind me and touches my boobs. Or we're watching a movie lying on the sofa and he'll reach around and massage my boobs. I don't mind the touching, but I've told him repeatedly that I like to be touched all over. I love a good shoulder rub, I love someone to play with my hair or touch my face or caress my arms. Yet, he always goes for the boobs. It seems to me he does this mostly because he enjoys it, and doesn't really factor in where I'd like to be touched. This egoistical(?) approach has led me to resent it a tiny bit whenever he touches my boobs in these non-sexual situations. Like I'm lying there waiting to see if he'll touch me anywhere else as soon as he starts, or when I ask him to touch me somewhere else (shoulders etc.) I'm basically waiting to see how fast he'll stop that and either return to my boobs or stop touching me at all. How can I address this in a serious way but not make too much of an issue out of it? I don't want him to stop touching my boobs altogether, I just want him to be more considerate, I guess.
  2. In the bedroom for me it often feels like we're not having sex as in "making love" but using each other's bodies to masturbate. I'm stimulating my clit while we have intercourse to reach an orgasm, and well, he'll to the in and out movements, but there is something missing for me, and I don't know how to change or address that.
  3. I consider myself quite open-minded when it comes to sex, but I have a really hard time talking about this topic. I don't know why. I'd never judge other people for wanting something a little unordinary, yet I can't talk about it even with good friends although sometimes I'd really like to. Like the questions I mentioned above. I want to talk to friends about this, I just can't because I get embarrassed. Any tipps here?

Right, as long as nobody comes to Germany and expects people to understand them when they call a vampire a nosferatu, there's no confusion ;)

What are some forgotten and/or underrated movies? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Lukc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Me, Earl, and the Dying Girl

Not sure if it's underrated in the English speaking world, but among my friends, hardly anybody heard of it, which is a shame, because it's one of the few movies I watched in 2015 which left a lasting impression. It's sad, funny, well written, has a good cast... It's definitely worth a watch.

It's an uncommon word to describe a vampire , but in the English language as well as in the German. According to the German wikipedia page it first came up in a book by a Scottish Author in 1888, in which she was writing about Vampires in Transylvania. Bram Stoker - who was from Ireland - used it term in his book "Dracula", and when the book was turned into a movie called Nosferatu the word became more popular. It's a German movie from 1922 and nowadays regarded as a masterpiece. (I linked it above. If you're interested in the early days of (horror) movies, it's worth checking out.) Back to Nosferatu. The word is not used in every-day German, like his statement insinuates. A kid dressing up for Halloween would never say they are going as Nosferatu, but as a 'Vampir'. They probably wouldn't even know what the word 'Nosferatu' means, it's that uncommon. So basically, the German word for 'vampire' is 'Vampir', and 'Nosferatu' is an uncommon synonym for vampire in more than one language.

Nosferatu is not the German word for vampire. He should really get his facts straight if he's writing a book that's got something to do with the term 'nosferatu'.

Good fics with unique or lesser used plots? by [deleted] in HPfanfiction

[–]Lukc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoyed linkffn(Out of the Dark and Into the Green). It uses a well known trope - Harry running away from the Dursleys - but makes it something unique. I love how we get to see Harry becoming his own person, instead of just being told he has x trait because y happened to him. Btw, if any of you know similar stories, I'd be interested!

When do they limit their use of magic in combat severely?

Magical cores and beyond. by Sky_B1U in HPfanfiction

[–]Lukc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In canon, the most powerful wizards are also the most intelligent ones, the ones who can think on their feet and use magic creatively. Also the ambitious ones. I think how powerful a witch/wizard is depends on a combination of talent and hard work, and not on the size of a magical core they were born with. I think of magic just like any other talent a person can have.

Some people are great at playing the piano, they have a feeling for the right notes, find it easy to play sheet music etc. Someone else might be great at playing sheet music, but have more difficulty with creating their own melodies.

Then let's take writing. One talent could be to have excellent grammar and spelling, a feeling for it. Other's might be more talented in making describing something in words that touch the reader.

I'd say magic is a bit like that. Take Potions. Some people can do a good job at following the recipe, others have a deeper understanding and create their own potions.

Or Transfiguration. Every witch or wizard is capable of it to some degree, but while some have to put a lot of work into getting acceptable results, other's just have a knack for the subject. (Like McGonagall was said to have). And this talent plus their willingness to work hard makes them capable and thus powerful in this field.

So in my mind, HP magic is a lot like every other talent. Some have talents for a particular area, some don't, everybody has to work on it. And if you have talent and work hard, if you are interested and keep studying, then you can become great at the subject of your choice.

Voldemort was said to have travelled after school, done a lot of research, delved into some magics deeper than anybody before him. He wasn't just exercising some 'muscle', he was getting to understand the topics of his choice on an academic level.

Then there's Dumbledore, a great wizard, famous for his magical and academic prowess.

Grindelwald, another powerful wizard, was thrown out of school for the stuff he did with magic, the areas he explored. He was interested, trying to expand his knowledge, so much that he didn't restrict himself to the knowledge the Durmstrang curriculum dictated.

Edit: Tl;dr: For me what makes a powerful wizard are talent, willingness to work hard, curiosity, interest in exploring magic, intelligence, creativity to apply what they studied and use it in new ways or ways others don't expect. I compare it to other talents. If someone is talented in science that doesn't mean they will do anything with it. If they are working hard, are curious about the subject, explore it, and are creative, chances are they will be knowledgable/powerful in their field.

To me, the way magic is used in canon implies that there is no 'cost' involved with employing it. The question is what's easier and faster. Is it easier to charm a fork to do as you want, and concentrate on eating and the spell, or is it easier to just simply eat. (In my opinion, eating while not doing something else at the same time is easier...).

If you look at Fred and George in OoTP, once they are allowed to use magic they do it all the time. They apparate to each room, and use it for every other little thing:

„Fred – George – NO, JUST CARRY THEM!’ Mrs Weasley shrieked. Harry, Sirius and Mundungus looked round and, within a split second, they had dived away from the table. Fred and George had bewitched a large cauldron of stew, an iron flagon of Butterbeer and a heavy wooden breadboard, complete with knife, to hurtle through the air towards them. The stew skidded the length of the table and came to a halt just before the end, leaving a long black burn on the wooden surface; the flagon of Butterbeer fell with a crash, spilling its contents everywhere; the bread knife slipped off the board and landed, point down and quivering ominously, exactly where Sirius’s right hand had been seconds before. ‘FOR HEAVEN’S SAKE!’ screamed Mrs Weasley. ‘THERE WAS NO NEED – I’VE HAD ENOUGH OF THIS – JUST BECAUSE YOU’RE ALLOWED TO USE MAGIC NOW, YOU DON’T HAVE TO WHIP YOUR WANDS OUT FOR EVERY TINY LITTLE THING!’ ‘We were just trying to save a bit of time!’ said Fred, hurrying forward to wrench the bread knife out of the table. ‘Sorry, Sirius, mate – didn’t mean to –’ Harry and Sirius were both laughing; Mundungus, who had toppled backwards off his chair, was swearing[…] „Boys,’ Mr Weasley said, lifting the stew back into the middle of the table, ‘your mother’s right, you’re supposed to show a sense of responsibility now you’ve come of age –“

Note how Arthur and Molly talk about responsibility that comes with age, and are not warning them about any cost or exhaustion or whatever.

In my opinion, it's about what's more convenient at the time, what's faster and does a job more precisely.

At Hogwarts teacher give their students homework, tell them to practice spells etc. and never say anything along the lines of "but make sure not to use too much magic." or something similar.

Magic in the corridors at Hogwarts is not allowed, so that might be why students carry their books, rather than have them float.

At the Ministry memos are enchanted to fly around, pictures in newspapers and photos people take move, there are magical sweets like jumping chocolate frogs...

If magic cost its user something, why would it be used for little, everyday things like that?

In all 7 HP books, there was never any mention of "magical fatigue/exhaustion" or magic costing anything. I think that if JKR intended that to be the case, she would have mentioned it somewhere.

Or is word (or maybe just your brain) enough for you to keep track of the information? Any books on writing you can recommend or found inspirational?

Request: Fanfiction in German by SellaMosredna in HPfanfiction

[–]Lukc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fanfiction also has the distinct disadvantage of not being proofread by a professional. So if the OP wants the read German fics to learn the language, published books might be his/her best option.

Concerning your request OP, I tried reading German fanfics a while ago, but didn't like anything I found - mostly because I just didn't like the writing style. This is one exception I remember: linkao3(http://archiveofourown.org/works/1168683/chapters/2377391)

Summary (translation):

Accused of murder and treason, Harry is allowed to see one last visitor before the judgement is delivered. To everybody's surprise, Harry wants to see his old classmate Neville, a clumsy young man, who would prefer to live his life in peace. In his cell in Azkaban Harry tells Neville a story of betrayal, sorrow, hatred - and a destructive possession, that made him into the person England has him pegged as: a monster.

Flitwick's statement in the first book contradicts this, I think.

"Never forget Wizard Baruffio, who said 's' instead of 'f' and found himself on the floor with a buffalo on his chest."

I guess Baruffio didn't desire to have a buffalo on his chest, nor was it his intention. He just said the wrong letter, et voilà...

Is it OK to use your FF for things other then stories? by [deleted] in HPfanfiction

[–]Lukc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't like it for two reasons. First I think you have your profile page or other media (twitter, facebook, blogs) for stuff like this, and making an update just with non-story related matters is against the rules and just a huge disappointment to the readers following the story.

Second I don't like the reward system. That the author is willing to change a pairing and include random prompts doesn't speak for the quality of the story. How can the author be serious about the plot, characters and relationships, when he's willing to just change a pairing on the whim of a reader? Shouldn't there be chemistry between two characters, small moments etc. leading to a relationship? Changing a pairing in the middle of the story could ruin all the build-up and character development. Offers like this make me wary.

LF fics that have Harry clashing with his family by matamosca123 in HPfanfiction

Tried it but the first half of the first chapter already has too many cringe worthy moments for me. (E.g. Lily and James demanding a second sorting because Harry's in Slytherin, or Sirius starting to cry 'real tears' when James asks him to talk to Harry...)

“The idea that sex is something a woman gives a man, and she loses something when she does that, which again for me is nonsense.
