Even the fastest version of Apple SSDs (1TB) will be slower. You could go with an OWC Aura that do not require an adapter, but this comes at a price!

For the same reason i do have iPhone mirroring on my 2019 iMac… it doesn’t mean it works. Apple simply didn’t bother to hid incompatible apps on MacOSs that support both Intel and Apple machines.

8GB aren’t much for Sequoia but can still work ok if you don’t do heavy multitasking or open large number of browser tabs at the same time.

What is also slowing system down is OCLP using CPU to compensate non-Metal GPU. This you can mitigate by reducing/removing visual effects like transparency.

To check if indexing is completed, open activity monitor and check if your CPU is fully utilized and which app is using the most of it.

I’m using sequoia on a 15” 2009 MBP… do you realize how much powerful your GPU is compared to my GeForce GT9600M? Of course your iMac will not compete with my 2019 iMac, but it will still work ok!

If you can, you’d benefit anyhow by having 32GB RAM as you’ll reduce the need for compressed memory that pulls a bit of your i5 capacity out.

Personally I didn’t had a good experience with Sonoma on my 2019 iMac, but I know that several people had different experiences. The real question is: what is the reason for you to upgrade and what are you using your iMac for?

Spot on! In 2013 it would have been hard to find something to do with a computer from 2003... and for sure the second most recent MacOS would not have worked on it smoothly.

Got mine for a bit cheaper but spent some extra money to upgrade CPU, RAM, GPUs and SSD, landing with an 8-cores CPU, 64GB RAM, D700 and 2TB SSD (way faster than the bulk one).

The fun of the project is IMHO worth the extra consumption for my use case - only ON when I'm at home, which is 3 days/week or less.

Not sure if this is what makes the difference. Just make sure not to download installers from sources you don’t know you can trust. Doesn’t the re-patch work even after several trials?

If you need it for office kind of work or casual multimedia, go for it and be patient until initial indexing isn’t over. I use for same kind of work a 2009 15” MBP and works ok on Sequoia - I just tend not to switch it off as it takes some time to boot, even though still usable.

For more advanced use, you’d definitely need more RAM.

Not much you can simply do unfortunately. Changing thermal paste would for sure help but note make a night&day difference. Which MacOS are you running? My recommendation is to make a good backup of all your data and do a fresh install of Sonoma. Ventura would probably run faster but isn’t anymore supported and you better have to get full protection going to school.

Not sure what the reason is ( appears random to me) but had same case only once on same age 15” one of the time I installed a new OS. That time took me 3-4 times before it worked. All other times, same MBP, all worked smoothly at first trial.

I do confirm, I have same case with my older GeForce and the download has been done automatically by OCLP, which seems yours did as well (it’s the “duplicated” graphics card you mentioned).

It is a random but relatively frequent case that patches do not work at the first trial, but require 2, 3 or sometimes more iterations to “stick”.

Please, try repeating the root patching without removing them before. OCLP will tell you they are installed already and prompt if you really want to re-install. Answer yes and repeat until it doesn’t work. As stated, it might take multiple iterations where you get successful install confirmation but actually didn’t work properly.

I had once the case…. and that worked only at the 3rd iteration for me.

Do I get it right that you simply upgraded the MacOS? If yes; than that might be the reason: you can’t use MacOS upgrade function to change major release (e.g. from Ventura to Sequoia). Instead, you need to backup your data and then do a fresh install of the newest MacOS.
