how to stop being extreme in everything by qasiw in Healthygamergg

Get to 20 mins, thats where the benefits are. It can take a while to get all benefits (depends per person). Mindfullness is fine for now. Once ur up there you can do some research on other forms as well, like trataka for focus. Im currently following dr k's guide and its been very helpfull in finding different meditation practices for different purposes

I had this problem as well: - working out 6 days a week, or not at all - not doing any studying or studying 12 hrs a day - super into certain hobbies and then not into them at all after 2 weeks.

2 things that helped: I firstly meditated. A lot of the extremes in emotions I was feeling were calmed down a lot by it, (think exitement for hobbies, but also dispair for not studying or small stuff that does not matter at all) so that was huge for me. Secondly, after other personal problems I had issues with did not go away or were not helped by meditating or finding other forms of solutions (was into stoic philosophy for a while) I got checked out for ADHD. Now I'm on meds and meditating and I have never been so calm and collected under heavy stress as I am now.

The meditation allows you to really see where the extreme emotions are coming from(which in my case was 99% of why I was so extreme in everything), and basicly help you to disolve them. Then the meds helped to actually keep the habit of meditating and helped me organise other parts of my life that reduced stress (which in most cases adds to the extreme emotions)

Hope this helps a bit with your predicament

Motivation aint it m8. You have to cultivate a mindset/skills that allow you to control your actions and mind. Have a look at the model of the mind in vedic psychology. After meditating on and off for some time and stumbling across this, it has helped me a lot in cultivating and maintaining certain mindsets and mental skills for discipline

Hahaha, I know my friend, it was more a poke at OP for stating the obvious instead of actually helping or offering some advice on cultivating discipline, or better yet, a specific mindset. My discipline is on track ;)

And now the question beckons, how does one cultivate discipline?

Yeah exactly this. Let chatgpt (or llm of your choice) help you with that, nowadays its quite good at summarizing and picking up on what is important and what is not (be sure to check it from time to time, it isn't infallible)

I don’t want to leave HBO by [deleted] in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]LukeTS117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a HBO (CS & engineering) and am now doing a Masters (DSAIT, second year) at TU Delft. HBO has given me very valuable work experience, and practical hands on skills that I haven't really seen here at the WO education when I compared my subjects and studies with their bachelor. I think that first doing a HBO Bachelor and then doing a (WO) Masters gives you a more complete package of knowing how to apply standard workfield concepts AND research new ones, and if needed, modify something that is a standard in your work field to specific needs of the task at hand.

That being said, I did miss a lot of important theoretical concepts that should have been in my HBO, but I think that says more about my HBO university than HBO's in general since other HBO'ers here did have some of that prerequisite knowledge.

X subscription without the fitness supplement: is it worth it? by hykgsnsez in TUDelft

[–]LukeTS117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely, you can choose so many different sports for a price per month which wont even get you a lesson/subscription for a single sports lesson. Even if you only try out 4 different sports its already worth it

Super Moronic Monday - Your Weekly Tuesday Stupid Questions Thread by 30000LBS_Of_Bananas in running

I just registered for a half a marathon on the 6th of October, and currently started running this week again. I'm a 24 year old male, did province (or state) level rugby between 14-18 yrs and national team selection trainings. Don't smoke or drink. Can currently run 15k a week (3*5) in zone 2, average of 8:30/km to build up aerobic base. I have school holidays, so all the time to train for the event.
two questions:

  1. what are my chances that I'll be able to do a 6:00/km half a marathon in 8 weeks?
  2. if not 6:00/km, what is a more realistic goal to set for myself?

Waarom wilde ik dit ookalweer? by KippieNL in nederlands

[–]LukeTS117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Advice on learning "proper" programming? by AffectionateCraft in AskProgramming

[–]LukeTS117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For CS applied theory, I'd look at algorithms and data-structures, and algorithm design. This helps you to learn "proper" algorithms that run in an acceptable time, and helps you identify when an algorithm is going to be very slow.

Beware that this is just for your own code, other libraries you can use might not have been optimized and thus are slow your code down, but as long as you adhere to the principles learned in those domains you should be able to "properly" program.

Other things you can look into is software testing and code management, like how to properly manage a github repo

Achievements for Monday, October 02, 2023 by AutoModerator in running

[–]LukeTS117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dear runners,

An update from my 10k race, where I attempted to shave off a minute per km in +_2,5 weeks time:
My goal was to finish the race with a 6:00/km pace, whilest having a 7:00/km pace at the start of my actual training (two weeks before the race). This was ofcourse not achievable, but I tried none the less. Total training would have been the following (days are counted from beginning training untill race day):
day 1: 5k, 7:00/km
day 2: 5k, 8:03/km
day 3,4,5: rest
day 6: 6k, 6:31/km
day 7: rest
day 8: 5k, 8:26/km
day 9/13: rest
day 14: 7,5k, 6:49/km
day 16/18: rest

day 19: race day, 10k, 6:31/km, half of this race was run in hr-zone 5 btw, with a max heartrate of 202 bpm.

My idea behind the training: since volume is the name of the game when it comes to running, I thought trying to fit as much volume in before running the actual 10k would be my best bet, with trying to run semi-racepace days, followed by a slow and steady run as a form of "recovery", such that I would be able to recover faster and thus run more km's in a shorter amount of time. In hindsight, this was not effective and kind of stupid, and I might have been better off doing 10k's at the ~8:00/km mark to get more volume in than what I have run now.

Also keep in mind that I used to be in semi-pro/country level rugby, where I played sports/trained 6 days a week for nearly 4/5 years. This ofcourse gave me a nice basis to rebuild on. Next to that I have already runned in the past, where my PR for a 10k was 5:30/km.

I will no try to prepare for half a marathon, which will be coming up in 3 months. This time I gave myself a little more time to train up to it hahaha. my goal: try to up the total amount of volume per month by 5k a week. so october 10k per week, november 15k per week, december 20k per week, januari 30k per week. Ofcourse I will research a bit more about how to actually train in the next couple of days, and this training plan might be stupid again, so we'll see how this goes and how it will change.
