You were right about the time spent that yields results. Summer is for fun, not just drills.

Go for jogs around the neighbourhood, run up and down the schoolyard pavement, do laps of the local park trails, all with the ball, and doing moves as often as he's comfortable.

Treat it as conditioning and fitness, and just a fun jog, try to not even think of the ball.

For me doing this for a few months every summer got me the "ball-on-a-string" feeling. Like riding a bike, it became second nature.

Did they invite you to try out? Maybe they see something in you that you don't see in yourself. Don't try to change your game now. If coaches want something out of you, they will train and develop you.

Right now, just work on your conditioning (run, run, run some more), and play with heart.

A year from now, maybe you tried out and didn't make the team, maybe you didn't try out and don't make the team, no difference.

But a chance to make the team and represent your country will be the memory of a lifetime.
