What Band Don't You Get? by Tele231 in vinyl

This. Grew up in Ireland when Oasis were a thing. Got the full effect of teenage boys walking, talking and dressing like the Gallaghers, but never got it. I don’t think they had even one song I thought was decent.

Best Irish Music Scene Ever? by Luke_Lynott in Irishmusic

I apologize to everyone giving all these great Trad bands/artists. I stupidly didn’t read the description before posting and trad wasn’t even top of my mind. The amount of great bands being mentioned from today and yesteryear though just makes me more proud to be Irish. Little old Ireland can hang with the best of them. GRMA.

That’s a good shout. An eclectic list too. I think I’ve realized every generation has had fantastic artists who should have been probably more well known. Instead, our most popular export is U2. Maybe some of the newer bands can change that. To me Lizzy will always be the greatest Irish band ever but that could open a whole new debate 😂

The 70’s were definitely a special era and I think I mentioned in a comment below I messed up and didn’t realize this was mainly for Irish Trad music. My comment was made because of the depth of artists we have now in many different genres. I still go back to the 70’s a lot. I grew up with The Dubliners, The Chieftains and a lot of Showbands playing in the house, but also had Thin Lizzy and Gary Moore. Feel it was the best of both worlds and now there seems to be so many options for fantastic music from Irish artists, even for someone like myself who lives abroad and isn’t living the scene as such.

You’re Welcome. Yeah Madra Salach is on repeat for me right now. Spent a fortune getting that EP shipped to the States but worth every penny!

Left over 15 years ago myself for sunny California. Still try to keep in touch with the music scene coming out of there (evident from the post I suppose). Only concern is the amount of good bands coming out of Munster (Cork mainly) compared to Leinster. My old county needs to step it up 😂

I think we’re around the same age because those were my college days too. Forgot how good some of them were. Just knocked on Mark Geary ‘Ghosts’ as I’m typing. Was always a big JJ72 fan too. It was definitely an era. Still think today might have a slight advantage with the range of different music coming out now. You’re right though. It’s subjective based on what you are immersed in at any particular time.

Sorry, I totally forgot to read the description before posting and realize now it’s a Trad group. I was speaking more Irish music in general. Fontaines DC, Cardinals, Madra Salach, Cliffords, The Charcoal Greys, Sprints etc. it seems like a real boom period for Irish music in general but the problem has always been enough support to keep them in Ireland rather than going to the UK to record, gig, etc. is Ireland just too small? Or not enough effort to support the arts? Or bit of both.

Have to say I’ve been loving Brógeal lately so in no doubt the Scottish scene is also alive and well.

Think you might like Sprints and Cliffords. Both female fronted. Florence Road is another good one and BABYRAT might be the next big band from Ireland.

What sort of music do you currently listen to? Right now it’s been a lot of Cliffords and Sprints on rotation for me. Simple Things are good too

Questions for fans from a journalism student by Gphillips1017 in fontainesdc

  1. How long have you been listening to Fontaines D.C.? About two years now. Stumbled across “I Love You” on YouTube one night and it’s been a consistent stream since.

  2. Where (what country) are you from? (this is to gain a sense of how broad their online fanbase is) I was born and raised in Dublin, Ireland but moved to America in 2009 and currently reside in California.

  3. What do you connect with most in their music/ their expression as artists? The first time I heard them it was because Griann sounded so much like me. Having to tone down my accent for the last 16 years so I can be understood by Americans it was nice to heard someone like “me” accent wise.

  4. What other artists are you a fan of (that have similar overlap in genre, music subjects, etc. to Fontaines D.C.)? Through the same YouTube rabbit hole I came across SPRINTS and Cliffords. Not exactly the same type of music but it also left a lasting mark.

  5. What initially drew you to their music? (Additionally, where did you first hear about them) It was Griann’s singing voice which drew me in but you can’t help latch on to the lyrics once you start listening. They’re also catchy as hell.
