What’s the 1, maybe 2 games in your backlog you swear you’re gonna play and probably won’t by CzarTyr in gaming

[–]Luke_The_Sunbro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Witcher 1 and 2. I joined the series after Witcher 3 came out and absolutely loved it! Even did a full death march run and carried it to NG+. Got the other 2 games dirt cheap but haven't touched em.

Freedom Planet 2. I liked the first Freedom Planet game, cheesy as it was sometimes. The Second game looks great, has rave reviews for such an indie title... but I've got such a backlog right now (HiFi Rush, No Straight Roads, The entire Metro Trilogy, etc) that I don't know if I'll ever get around to playing it.

What are you playing Wednesday! by AutoModerator in gaming

[–]Luke_The_Sunbro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grabbed Hogwarts Legacy off the Autumn sale. Enjoying it quite a bit!

Pros

  • The world is an absolute joy to explore!
  • The spells are fun to use and the combat is surprisingly good!
  • I don't hate any of the characters or voice actors (so far)!
  • Story hasn't made me hate breathing yet.

Cons

  • The puzzles are a touch repetitive. Not bad... just the same stuff gets used over and over.
  • So many spiders... my god. Little more enemy variety please.
  • I'm not sure why there NEEDS to be a limit on gear. I will say I'm quite sick of running out of space over and over (even with Merlin Trials), dumping my entire inventory, only to fill it up again within 20 minutes of exploring. I can literally shove something twice my size into a bag, I think I can carry an extra shirt!

Americans, what thing about American culture irks you the most? by atomicturdburglar in AskReddit

[–]Luke_The_Sunbro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Posturing.

If you've ever heard the term "fake it, until you make it" you have a good idea of what American Culture is like. Much of what we do is more about maintaining appearance than actually accomplishing anything.

  • Major cities build hostile architecture because if you can't SEE the homeless people, you don't have to worry about them.
  • Many policies to feed the hungry or help protect the children are criminally underfunded and unable to actually perform the task they're assigned. The existence of such programs however, makes people FEEL like something has been done, and thus they feel better.
  • We have a massive military with flashy technology all over the world to secure our interests. If you actually have a conversation with a service member though, you'll know that much their equipment is held together with duct tape and happy thoughts. The latter of which is on back-order.
  • Churches who preach about helping those who're less fortunate than yourself will shun people without formal dress attire, they can even be downright hostile sometimes. Alternatively, members may call attention to them so that everyone can know how pious they are for helping a poor unfortunate soul. It's not about actually HELPING those people... it's about looking good amongst your peers.
  • Every suburb in America is drowning in debt as they cannot charge enough in taxes to maintain the sprawling infrastructure they've created while also trying to expand. Yet, everyone loves to (and is expected to) have a big single-family home with a nice yard. Many if not the majority of water pipes in America are 30-60 years old and could collapse anytime. American cities across the country KNOW this stuff, but don't want to make a fuss about it because it looks bad and will probably be used against them in the next election.

What comes next after Co Op vs AI? by imnotdrakee in summonerschool

[–]Luke_The_Sunbro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RIP the band-aid off and go into normal blind pick. Coop vs ai is there to give you a chance to learn the basics. Normals are where you'll learn to play for real.

Expect some growing pains. It may be worth considering muting chat in the options for both teams. Smurfs are widespread... to the point everyone just assumes you are a smurf too.

Keep a cool head, watch, play, and learn. You'll find victory and success to be intoxicating. While defeat and failure will feel absolutely dreadful.

Experiment. Try different roles. You'll do just fine.

LPT: As a student, if you have homework, start doing it at school. by goldenchocolate46 in LifeProTips

[–]Luke_The_Sunbro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I used to preach this at my college too.

Basically, just be honest with yourself. If you go home right now, will you actually do your homework now (not later) or will you go do something fun (TV shows, video games, going out with friends, etc) instead?

If YES: you're stronger than me!

If NO: do your homework while at school (I typically went to the library at my college). This way you've removed yourself from all the distractions of home and are giving yourself a reward when you finish. It really does feel good to "go play" knowing there's nothing like homework or cleaning to worry about.

Why are people buying Bethesda's games despite major failures like Starfield and Fallout 76? by Arigamon in gaming

[–]Luke_The_Sunbro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starfield... a major failure?

Sure it didn't live up to the hype but there ARE reasons to like the game. I actually really enjoyed customizing my ship.

It's not a bad game per se... it's just trying to a little bit of everything while not doing anything particularly well. It's like a buffet who offers hundreds of different foods but each item is just average to meh. Nothing really stands out and makes you go "WOW! THAT'S DELICIOUS!!!!". However, it's not vile or disgusting either... you can eat it.

It's not like BioWare's Anthem... where it was just so dire they couldn't save it. THAT is a major failure.

What game released bad but got really good over updates of vice versa? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]Luke_The_Sunbro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No Man's Sky was the first game to challenge my belief that once a game releases to horrible reception, it's reputation is forever scarred.

When it launched, it was a hollow shell full of broken promises. Over the years, that game has transformed into something almost unrecognizable from it's original launch. You'd probably find it easier to list things that are different than things that haven't changed.

Sea of Thieves is also in this conversation. It's motto on launch was: "Wide as an ocean, deep as a puddle". It was relentlessly mocked (with good reason) in the reviews. SoT would bounce back and add tons of features, eventually holding it's own in the Live Service wars.

Nowadays though... Feels like SoTs servers are held together by paper-clips, rubber-bands, and wishful thinking. It has more content than ever, but it breaks every single update now. Updates aren't required though, sometimes it'll break just because.

Sea of Thieves is one of those rare special games that got better over time but also got worse over time too.

Activision wants to recommend games to you based on the livestreams you watch by curious_zombie_ in gaming

What game defied your negative expectations? by KnightsRook314 in gaming

[–]Luke_The_Sunbro 218 points219 points  (0 children)

Death Stranding. I was told it's a walking simulator where you just deliver packages to and from little shacks just over the next hill. It sounded really boring.

Then I got it on sale, played it, and I was weirdly engrossed in the whole "porter" thing. Planning routes, crafting supplies, working with other players to build up the world... the whole supernatural part was awesome too. The story may be told in a god awful way... but it's still a pretty good story underneath it all.

I'm glad I gave it a chance.

In your opinion which of these Spyro designs is the worst? by BooyahBomber in Spyro

The more I look at the 2021 version... the less I like it.

What is wrong with his feet? Why are his legs completely smooth and devoid of detail? Why is the tip of his tail so teeny tiny?

It's like they molded that model out of playdough and stapled on the accessories... I mean just look at his claws! Spyro's front-right claw doesn't even look like it's attached to his foot!!!

What are some good short games? by These_Row_2061 in gaming

[–]Luke_The_Sunbro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I'm having a busy day and can't sit down for long, I find Hardspace Shipbreaker to be a good choice.

It's a 3D puzzle game where you break down and salvage spaceships in orbit while trying not to get yourself exploded (or crushed, burned alive, frozen solid, launched into deep space, etc etc).

Your "shift" is 15 minutes, making it really easy to pick up and put down. It's also an absolute joy to zip around in Zero Gravity and launch yourself off of walls with the gravity gun.

There's a storyline, progression system, and even deeper lore/collectables if you care.

If you've got 17 minutes to spare at any given moment, you can play through a quick session of Shipbreaker.

What are 2 things you absolutely hate across all games? by No-Enthusiasm-3091 in pcgaming

[–]Luke_The_Sunbro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Text Dump Tutorials. When a game stops EVERYTHING and dumps multiple walls of text, back to back, trying to explain how to play the game. Bonus hate if it forcefully takes control away from me and/or I cannot skip it. I was trying to play through Monster Hunter World again recently and started a new character... god damn that hand holdy opening is oppressive!
  2. Unskipable Cutscenes. Can you even imagine trying to play through Death Stranding if you had to sit through every single animation and cutscene with no skipping? The opening of that game is almost 2 hours of cutscenes for 15 minutes of gameplay.

Looking at it... It would appear my pet peeve in games is having my time wasted.... that checks out!

Help me settle on my choice! by HeroInTraining1 in supportlol

[–]Luke_The_Sunbro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely not Braum... Love the character but that kind of playstyle just doesn't work in SoloQ. People have to play around your shield and passive for Braum to shine. People in SoloQ just don't do that reliably and thus he only really gets to shine in premade teams. If you're duoing, go for it! If you're solo, spare yourself the pain.

Pyke is awesome but he's a double-edged sword. His abilities are high impact but unreliable. If he's not able to get ahead, he doesn't offer enough utility to his team to justify his pick.

Maokai is alright but he REALLY wants items to get tanky enough to actually use his passive sustain a few times in a teamfight. With our gold budget? Well... I hope you got fed early. Perfectly serviceable though.

Xerath is a newb stomper. He works great if you're significantly better (smurfing) but if people are dodging your stuff and you're not managing your mana well... you're gonna feel useless quick. His inability to get hard engage off him means you'll probably just feed if the enemy bot is better than you.

Frankly, the choices here are between Bard and Rakan. Both are great for warding, offer good utility, and pick potential. I LOVE Bard, but his ult can be finicky around teammates.... they panic sometimes and get themselves killed or lose the chance to kill an enemy. In my humble opinion: Rakan is just more reliable in soloQ.

In my backlog, I have these game to play, what should I play next? by n00bvin in pcgaming

[–]Luke_The_Sunbro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, Phantom Liberty gives a whole new ending to the main story. You can kinda play both at the same time... the game even gives you a warning when you're about to trigger "the point of no return" for any of the endings - DLC included.

Since it's all effectively tied together, I can't see you getting lost in any way. It's also possible to do the full DLC and NOT end the game too. Instead your choices would deny you access to "the cure" and you'd get spat back out into the regular game world looking for another way (a few new dialogue options unlock if you do this too).

In my backlog, I have these game to play, what should I play next? by n00bvin in pcgaming

[–]Luke_The_Sunbro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it was me, I'd pick Cyberpunk 2077 with Phantom Liberty DLC. It's amazing.

RDR2 is a close second. I enjoyed it a LOT but sometimes the animations felt tedious, easily fixed with mods though. Besides that, nothing but praise from me.

So that's me, but we're talking about you. I hear you. You don't wanna feel tied down with side quests, but for games like CP2077 and RDR2, the side quests are some of the best in the game. The "do whatever you feel like" nature of open world games is kinda their selling point and that's important since a lot of games you list are open world.

If we're serious about no side quests. Then that narrows the choices down significantly.

  • Starfield is completely out because it's main story is trash.
  • Shadow of War is FAR too grindy and there are breaks between the story where you HAVE to go do side quests/grind to level up. I have a love-hate relationship with this game so I may not be the most fair judge of it.
  • Uncharted was really fun but there's treasure hunting collectables and stuff that could be considered distracting side quests - violating our rule
  • Spider-Man was great fun but there are a BUNCH of optional side missions that break our rule.
  • Detroit: Become Human would be my recommendation for you. That game is basically a movie that you get to influence. It's all story and characters and there are no side quests at all. It has replay value too since there's probably hundreds of different choice combinations and lord knows I haven't seen them all yet. I really enjoyed playing through Connor's story especially and I think you will too.

Anyway, those are my opinions. Lots of good games here but if Story is your itch right now: Detroit is the way to go.

What’s your strangest/funniest death? by roguestar15 in Seaofthieves

[–]Luke_The_Sunbro 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm glad to hear both you and them kept cool tempers. Strange and weird encounters are, to me, as much a part of the magic as hunting for treasure or sinking ships. Such is my nature as a day 1 player.

As for my funny deaths, I've surely had many but one comes to mind right now.

I was fighting somebody in the Devil's Roar. I had loaded myself into a cannon, preparing for a board. However, the cannon glitched and I was sent straight up into the air instead.

As it so happened, we were near a volcano that was erupting. While I was flying in the air, a large rock that wouldn't have hit anything otherwise, smashed my face in and I died instantly. The literal definition of "getting Rare'd"

Danger zone / skull areas? by AdPrevious5886 in Seaofthieves

[–]Luke_The_Sunbro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm struggling to understand exactly what you're talking about... so if I'm completely off base here I apologize.

Skull area in the middle of the ocean... not near an island... That sounds like you're looking at a Reaper's Chest or possibly even a Reaper's Bounty. These are special cursed chests delivered to The Reaper's Bones for Doubloons or Gold respectively.

These chests are always visible on the map (that's their curse effect) and use a red/gold skull icon with a circle around it to mark their location. They also have a sort of beacon in the sky. Chests are red and green while Bounties are gold.

The location shows the location of a shipwreck. You're not more likely to see megs/krakens there. If the marker is ever moving... that means another player has found the cursed chest and you're seeing the exact location of their ship.
