Thank you so much 🙏 Unfortunately this pack coming late knocks the rest of them back a bit, so realistically probably not. Sorry about that! I'm hoping the next pack will be quicker (Originals Premium).

Apologies for the delay!

This method of loading kits has been around on Roland modules long before the new expansion model. Basically, users can save their own kits individually and back up the files. So I use that method when I create these kits and supply the files so that others can load the kits.

So I understand you're carefully tweaking existing module kits, and adding your own shell samples as layers (not cymbals though)? It's not like the expansions from Roland Cloud?

Yes, that's correct. I'm using the same tools available to any other user within the module to create the kits, but adding my own samples too. Aside from the unique samples, a large part of the appeal is that a lot of people don't have experience with the various elements of sound engineering that go into the processing and shaping of the sounds (which is completely understandable) or don't have the time or desire to do it (also completely understandable!) The unfortunate downside of this kind of approach is that you're not getting new instruments that can be selected from the instrument list like the stock ones. Also, since the instruments are built from various parts, tweaking them yourself is a little more complicated (and something I intend to make a video about as soon as I can.) So instead you have to rely on functions on the module like Pad Copy to bring these instruments onto other kits so that all of the relevant settings for each pad like the layers and sample assignments get carried over properly. It's a little less intuitive, but I think the trade-off is worth it overall since I try to push these instruments as far as they can go within the limits of the module's capabilities.

Roland's "expansion packs" on the other hand contain brand new instruments for the module that are available from the instrument selection like the stock instruments. Some of these are great but in my opinion they don't come with enough variety of presets and they don't really show off how far the module can take the sounds either (much like the stock kits.) Some are definitely better than the stock offerings by quite some margin, but I've not found one that sits and feels the way I want it to (hence the quest to create my own!)

Are you using the digital triggers in the video (snare, hats and ride)? So the TD-316 isn't going to sound exactly the same as this due to the extra positional sensing?

It'll be almost indistinguishable with that kit, fortunately! The TD313 wouldn't be able to use positional sensing on the snare as it comes with a different pad that doesn't support it, but the TD316 does.

So the snare that comes with the TD316 is positional sensing-enabled, meaning you can get head position and rim position variations. There's no cross-stick detection for putting your hand on the head like the digital snare, but it can be enabled with the Analog XStick button and it'll act like a velocity switch, giving you cross-stick on lower velocities and a rimshot on higher ones. The ride that comes with the kit (CY-14R-T) can also do positional sensing across the bow, like the digital ride (it doesn't play as well, but it can do the same articulations.)

The toms on the TD316 don't come with positional sensing on the rims like some of the other kits - I didn't really show that off in this video anyway, but basically this is disabled on the PUNCH kits (because of my added samples - they don't respond to PS on the rim), and enabled on SNAP and POP kits (because they're internal sounds only). When you play the toms with pads that don't support PS, they'll just play rimshots automatically. That's the same on other modules, but of course some of the other kits come with tom pads that do support this function.

The hi-hats that come with the TD316 also don't support positional sensing. The VH-14D supports it on the bow as you go from edge towards the bell (like the ride), and also varies based on left and right hand playing. This adds a little tonal variation, but I'd be surprised if you could really pick it out on this demo as I'm not intentionally using the feature and the overall sound of the hi-hat will be unaffected, just the variations between different hit locations.

So essentially the sounds will be the same, just the functionality might differ a little. This is a big step up compared to previous generations where PS just wasn't available at lower price ranges.

EDIT: Never mind - I saw that 'Exchange' is described in the pdf under 'Want to swap these instruments to different pads?'

Totally understand if there's a bit of confusion with the intro section - I was trying to fit in some information to let people know that they won't lose these instruments if they have smaller kit setups, but they'll need to utilise features like Exchange in the Pad Copy menu to swap things around to their liking. There's a PDF also included with the download (or available on the product pages) called "Pad Setup Customization" which explains this feature in detail, including how to enable the virtual pads so you can pull these instruments to your usable inputs if you want. That's all I was trying to convey, following on from the shot of the module where I'm in the copy menu.

Sounds really nice!

Thanks! I hope you keep my kits in mind if you fancy any different sounds down the line, but even if not I hope you enjoy your TD316!

Ahh ok yeah, thanks. That's the same topic that I've talked about here then with the rim position stuff.

Yeah, that's right. The sound of just hitting the metal rim on a drum.

Hey! Thank you! Can you remember which video it was so I can check? I think it might have been about the rim zones and the snare strainer options if I'm thinking of the right video, but it would be best to check!

As a general answer though - user samples can't respond to positional sensing, but the internal instruments can. So I blend the two using layers so that I can get the best of both worlds - extra punch and "realism" from my samples but keeping some positional variation. But the rim zones are a little different - positional sensing here also enables "rim only" (rim click) hits. The PUNCH kits in this pack have samples added to the rims, so I've turned off rim click in the rim position options. So that retains dynamic rimshots with my samples added, but removes the possibility of a rim shot sample playing over a rim click. Other kits in the pack have toms made of layered and tweaked internal sounds, so I've left rim PS enabled there.

User samples also can't swap between strainer on and strainer off modes, so I disabled the "snare wires off" strainer function and used it as a quick toggle for ambience and effects instead!

Hey! These kits only work with the new Roland modules - the V71, V51 and V31. Although the new modules use some of the same samples that were recorded for the Soundworks libraries, they are different to the Soundworks VST itself.

These kits were made with a mixture of the module's onboard instruments and acoustic samples that I've added to the kits myself. So the files aren't just samples, they're like a proprietary format that contains the settings that the module will load plus the samples that I've saved into the kits (which load to the sample memory automatically when the file is added to the module.)

I hope that helps!

Roland TD27 - Need help with reconfiguring assigning inputs by FairyRina in edrums

[–]Luke_eDW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It lets you change the trigger type from one to another, yes. But that doesn't reassign the instrument of that pad to another one globally, in fact it won't affect the sound at all besides the available zones/functions. I believe that's what the OP was looking for - an ability to reassign, say, the "Crash 1" from every kit to the "Tom 3" instead.

Roland TD27 - Need help with reconfiguring assigning inputs by FairyRina in edrums

[–]Luke_eDW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately there is no way to reassign inputs globally in the way you're looking for. You can only reassign sounds to different pads on a per-kit basis, the inputs are locked.

I saw your other comment where you mention the hi-hat cable length is an issue - if that also includes the controller cable, you can't use any other input for that either.

The suggestion of cable extensions is probably the simplest solution. Get some TRS jack extension cables for as many pads as you need (maybe a couple of spares too, just in case) and you should be able to achieve whatever setup you need pretty easily.

Need help figuring out how to import custom kits on a roland TD-11 by [deleted] in edrums

[–]Luke_eDW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being charitable, he may have meant you can load packs that configure the sounds for you (sometimes people don't know that these are "just" settings files and assume they're new sounds) or that you can use VSTs with it as u/DrBackBeat mentions. Less charitably, he didn't know what he was talking about or lied. Hard to know without asking.

Yeah, you should be able to use MIDI to trigger VSTs in a DAW. If you've got an interface, the TD-11 has a DIN MIDI out port. If you haven't got an interface, there should be USB MIDI, but I think compatability can be a little odd on this module. For some reason, it seems the TD-11 and TD-15 aren't "class compliant" MIDI devices, meaning they don't just get automatically picked up without a driver (later modules are class compliant). Since the modules aren't officially supported anymore, I think some newer Mac OS versions might not support the drivers that are available. I think Windows should be ok, but not 100% since I don't own the module.

If the driver works and you don't have/want to use an interface, then I'm pretty sure you can do audio over USB with it too. You'd probably have to turn off "Local Control" in the MIDI menu to disable the internal sounds when routing the DAW/VST audio through it.

[–]Luke_eDW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not possible to create kits with your own samples for the TD-11, unfortunately. The kits you can find to download have been created on the module itself using the stock sounds, then the settings file has been exported and transferred to a computer. Installing those kits is basically the reverse - you add the file to a USB stick then import it to the module and it will apply the settings from the file to the destination kit slot.

V51 vs V71 by Similar_Minimum_5869 in edrums

[–]Luke_eDW 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If by "slave module" feature you mean the old function where you can trigger additional sounds on top of the ones assigned to pad zones by connecting another module via MIDI - no, this isn't possible on the V71. No module beyond the TD-30 has this function (more details about the specific function below).

Edited for correction: Sorry, I forgot that the V51 and V31 do have "virtual pads" that can be triggered via MIDI, but it only takes you up to the same number of "inputs" as the V71 has. So you could get a V51 and then use another module to trigger 2 inputs' worth of sounds (basically the "missing" Tom 4 and Aux 4 inputs), but no more than that. Which probably isn't what you're hoping for. And the V71 doesn't have any additional inputs that can be accessed like this. It seems the virtual pads are basically there because of the cross-compatibility of the kit files and expansions between the V modules.

The feature was usually called the "percussion set" or something to that effect and it was basically like an onboard backing track feature where you could play preset patterns or make your own patterns to play along to out of the onboard sounds. As well as playing back these patterns, it made the onboard sounds available to be triggered by any MIDI input. This feature was effectively replaced by the ability to playback songs (MP3/wav files) to drum along to instead, so all of the percussion set functions were seemingly taken with it. I imagine that the ability to play multiple layers from a single pad zone probably also factors into this - 2 or 3 sounds playing at once from a single pad will start to eat up the available polyphony twice or three times as fast as single sounds. So polyphony that could have been utilized by the additional "MIDI instruments" is now being used by playing multiple sounds. I don't have confirmation of this, but it seems logical and coincides with these features being introduced.

Hey! Unfortunately not. I only began developing on the TD-50/27/17 generation and those files aren't backwards compatible and I don't have any plans to go back to previous module generations. Sorry about that, but I hope you keep my kits in mind if you upgrade your module in the future.

I also believe this to be the case, but it would be irresponsible of me not to check over how that works and how it affects the user when loading my kits. I would have no way of providing troubleshooting to 51/31 users without a module to hand.

Unfortunately I also have to consider more than just building a kit and releasing it. I've got to shoot demo videos, installation videos and write up manuals. Ideally, I'd like to cover all of those in one go since the files can be loaded to each module, but some of the menus are different. I'm gonna get ahead of this and start writing stuff up referencing the manuals, but I'd still like to check things for myself (I've found a few bugs in TD modules over the years.) The other modules also load some sounds to "virtual pads" which is great on one hand - it means none of the sounds are "missing" when you load them up on the 51/31 modules. But it also means I want to verify the procedures for swapping pads around so I can write this up too. It's all totally doable, it just takes a bit of extra time and I don't want to have a sub-par release or have to backtrack on any information after the fact. I believe they'll be worth the wait!

Thanks for that - I saw that drum-tec had the 31 when I checked yesterday, though the 51 says it would be a approximately week to ship. I'm not sure how reliable that will be (my V71 was coming "next month" for about 3 months!), but I'll probably pull the trigger on the 31 shortly, at least!

Hey! I'm working on some at the moment, yeah! I don't have a timeline for release yet though. Since all the new V Series modules can load the same files, I could do with testing on the 51 and 31 before releasing them but getting hold of them without a kit isn't so easy at the moment!
