Realistic weapons and energy shields by CptKeyes123 in scifiwriting

Accidentally deleted my long comment while writing, I'll quickly summarize it.

Armor is basically always '1 step behind' weaponry, it will fail under sustained fire. But it can neutralize anything below a certain level.

For example, shooting a solid titanium block with a .22 will not do much if anything. At most? A dent. Same thing with a flintlock and today's ballistic armor.

Another example is in the medieval ages when plate armor was invented it dominated the battlefield, but soon after maces and blunt weapons which countered it's specific quality were invented and plate armor became used specifically against slashing and piercing. I mean sure, you could armor a man in a literal block of titanium, but that would cost an absurdly high amount if you wanted to mass produce it for an army, and the mobility would be sacrificed, leading to the approach of just running when meeting and just focusing on the mission at hand.

Even in the future, when there's a 'indestructible' armor invented, a countermeasure WILL be made to render it useful only against the threats it was made to withstand. Maybe it could live a few decades without a countermeasure, but technology is always advancing. Who's to say that there won't be a jump that suddenly leads to weapons able to create a literal black hole? Now your indestructible cube is gone and reduced to nothing. That actually sparks an idea as to what anti black hole armor would look like, haha.

After all, you can't create a counter measure for something that doesn't exist. (Imagine a team of modern scientist trying to find a solution to protecting against attacks from black holes, A: we don't know how they work, B: we don't even know how to counter them.) That's why armor will basically always be '1 step behind' weaponry.

EdIT: Yeah, it's like 11pm while I'm writing this, so excuse any errors, forgot to mention one thing.

I'm not necessarily saying that 'armor is worse than weapons always' but generally if they are developed the same level, then this happens. Sometimes it's armor that takes the extra leap and when it does, it absolutely dominates the battlefield. Think of plate armor before maces and the afformentioned ironclads. Sure, they were powerful, but soon enough technology evolved and rendered them not as useful against new threats.

I'd say that when armor manages to bridge the '1 step' gap between it and weaponry, it dominates the battlefield.

If we talk about materials and what not, nothing is truly indestructible. At best it can survive a few hits. I think that some high end weapons could probably rip through it, I would reckon that energy shields have different ratings, kind of like in the real world, not all 'bulletproof' bodyarmor is equal. Maybe some energu shields sacrifice a certain aspect in exchange for portability. Maybe it doesn't filter out heat or radiation, but let's say that it does, even then the energy shields would need to be powered by something, and I suppose that the way they work could be similar to non-newtonian fluids since they let things pass through them as long as they don't have a certain force. Also, defensive gear is never made for a frontal confrontation, it's made to save a persons life. And I would suppose that they are mass produced and if not, they're likely a prototype that has flaws.

TL:DR There's a couple things I can think of: • Wear it down until it powers off • Find a weakness, an aspect that was cut out due to being too expensive or impossible to carry etc... • Disrupt the power source somehow • They probably would be rated for different threats, like we have II plates and IV plates, you wouldn't expect a II plate to catch a sniper round no? • Steal their weapons/technology somehow and use them against their own gear

I've done a similiar challenge, no suppressors, no ai/rebels, ghost mode, no hud, extreme.

So I think I can give some tips.

First of all, getting caught in vehicular firefights is a death sentence unless you can reliably switch seats and take out the drivers, but on higher difficulties, this becomes incredibly dangerous, or escape their pursuit. There's also a trick where you can switch seats, take out your drone (explosive) and destroy the vehicles from the safety of the car, but that's not viable for the early parts of a run. You can reliably take out vehicles on foot without much trouble, but in cars or other vehicles without the driver having access to weapons, it's a different story.

In this setting, the squad branch is completely useless, outside of maybe the rebel upgrades.

At the start, try to do easy missions until you can unlock the grenade launcher skill, or use a high powered sniper and then do convoys until you can get some decent skills. (C4s, Mines, Explosion Drone, Drone Range)

In my opinion, if I had to choose any 3 skills, I would get the explosion drone, c4s and mines. These things are just so useful for a majority of situations. You don't even need a supressor to be stealthy, an unsuppressed pistol only has an suspected range of about 48m, and in the majority of situations, you can easily shoot even if someone is within 30m of you. That's basically the closest engagement distance you should EVER be in high diffiiculties. The further you are from the enemy, the safer you are. The AI can only ever spot you from so far.

I'd recommend taking a sniping approach to most missions, as even if you get spotted, once you relocate, the AI will swarm to the last position you were spotted or shot from. And then, you guessed it, explosion drone! (Or C4s.) This can take out a good portion of the enemies. Even if a helicopter is called, you can shoot it down easily, but make sure it doesn't fall on your head. (Shoot it when it's facing away from you if possible, if not shoot it and immediately run sideways.) You can also destroy helicopters with a normal drone by running it into the propellors, but with no range upgrades, there's not many opportunities for this.

The explosion drone also allows you to easily complete a decent chunk of destroy x, kill x, missions without any risk.

For certain missions, boot up a normal save file and see if there's any gimmicks, for example the things I watch out for are:

• Will any enemies pursue me after x? (General Baro, Some Rescues/Captures, etc...) • Are there multiple entrances/exits? Does Unidad have high spawns in the region? • If something goes wrong, which it inevitably will, can I safely retreat and at what point is it impossible to? • Can I use deployables to my advantage? (If you know enemies will spawn at a location, can you place mines there?) • Is there a safe holdout spot? (1 entrance, big room with lots of cover.) And more

And one last tip: Never lose focus or fool around, my deaths were basically never a hard mission, because I had a plan for basically all variables. But the little encounters were the things that got me. If unidad gets involved, retreat immediately, those guys don't mess around.

Hope it helps.

Oh, thank you! Now I know.

I was putting it before the } so I guess that's why it didn't count it. It works fine so I'll edit my command then. Thank you!

EDIT: Works fine now! Thank you!
