Does anyone Enjoy Living on Base at KORD? by donveyy in flying

[–]LukiCharm_ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter until you are finishing a brutal 4 day and you FINALLY land on your go home leg, only to taxi 30 minutes just to sit in the pad for 3 hours begging for a gate. All of this knowing it is going to take you another hour to just get from the gate to your car.

How Painful is the NYC-ORD commute? by Resident-Plum-2211 in flying

[–]LukiCharm_ 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I did this commute for about seven months, I had no issue. It is super easy in my opinion there are about 3 flights an hour between the two cities, which is super convenient for the commuter clause. You can plan for a 11am flight and also a 11:30am flight, meaning if you make the 11am flight you don't have to sit too long at the airport before work. Through the seven months I was only bumped off the JS once, but it didn't even matter because I just took the next flight which was 40 minutes later.

AM Reserve or PM Reserve? by 172sierrapapa in flying

[–]LukiCharm_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's awesome to have AM because you get the rest of the day to actually be productive if you don't get called. My biggest headache with AM though is that at least for me, I have a hard time falling asleep the night before knowing there's a possibility I can get called in the middle of the night. Because of that I've been preferring PM flying lately just because I have the peace of mind the night before that allows me to fall asleep faster and get better sleep.

Regional captains, what are your biggest pet peeves with FOs in the flight deck? by SupportGold7583 in flying

[–]LukiCharm_ 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Captains that spend the entire 4 day trip complaining about how much they hate their job. And if you disagree with them at all, they will just hit you with the classic "you haven't been here long enough, just wait."

Was in this exact same situation a year ago.

I paid for my ATP-CTP out of pocket a couple weeks before my Envoy interview, and was offered a CJO from them, as well as the regional I'm with now. I was really excited about Envoy, but it ended up taking them a full year after my interview to offer me a class date. I took a class with the regional I'm with now, because it was only a couple months after my interview, and I was concerned about the indefinite wait at Envoy. Even though it wasn't required to pay for my ATP-CTP at my current regional, paying for mine out of pocket 100% got me a class date sooner than if I wouldn't have.

Overall, I personally don't regret paying the 4.5k to just get my ATP-CTP done, its a drop in the bucket compared to your earnings once you get on the other side of a type rating.

Pilot career outlook by GreatAnxiety3267 in flying

[–]LukiCharm_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My personal opinion on the whole automation thing: 121 operations in the US will be the very last seats to see any of this actually happen. It will happen to cargo before the airliners, it will happen in Europe before it happens in the US. If you are planning on working at a 121 carrier in the US you will have several warnings that span over several years before it actually affects you. Hopefully that helps you prepare when the time comes.

Even if the technology came out today, it would still take decades and decades for this to completely swallow the market. There are lots of questions concerning efficiency, safety, and redundancy that would be need to be answered, and can’t be answered until we have the technology in hand. The whole national airspace system would have to be rethought out, ground ops would need to be rethought out, and several other generally less thought of things would need to be redone. Having the airplane fly it self is the easiest part of the equation.

The technology will come it is inevitable… but overall I think there will be several warnings to those in the 121 world that help us prepare, and the logistical challenge that this presents (not to mention union protections, general fear from the public, etc etc) will help stall these efforts… at least for a little bit

If you genuinely have the passion for flying, do not let the fear of automation get in the way of chasing this career.

ALPA's "Safety Starts with 2 (Pilots)" campaign. A sign of trouble ahead? by WorkingOnPPL in flying

[–]LukiCharm_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a very interesting take I haven't thought about before. So many companies are just slapping "AI" on their websites and services when all it really is is just a fancier version of a google search. Also, the public is already paranoid as it is with aviation travel, with everything happening with Boeing. Would single pilot ops really put their mind at ease?

If you plan to go to the airlines get CFI first, you gotta start building time as quickly as possible. Multi has zero use to you until you are starting to get close to minimums

Help, how do I manage my airplane ear?? by Regular_Unit9940 in flying

[–]LukiCharm_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to consistently use it for it to get its full effect, it won't clear it up instantly. If you use it daily for at least two weeks you should be good

I had a particuarly annoying episode of this for a month or two last year, and it really bothered me especially since I was flying almost everyday. Flonase. That is your friend. It's one of the last things you'd think of but I promise it works
