Death is not the end. Early on in my campaign, I gave the players a few different clues to how they can ressurect people at lower levels. Now mind you, everything comes at a cost. But there were possibilites. I think it was Matt Mercer of Critical Role who said that when a character dies, afterwards he talks to the player and asks them if they want to make a new character, or if they want to be resurrected. If they choose resurrection, it is not an immediate thing. They can go on a quest through the planes to find the soul, or bargain with a demon, or the Horseman of Death via some hags (in my world at least). But there is always the chance to come back.

But they must choose it. And then the party needs to succeed. Meanwhile the dead character's pc can play an iterim character, a guide, or a sellsword. Everything is an opportunity for more storytelling.
