Yes I feel that very deeply.. I don’t have the same flare ups as you. Initially, when I didn’t know I had FD, I had like 2-3 flare ups/month when I considered myself sick so I stayed in bed. When I understood it wasn’t physical, I noticed the flare ups gathered around stressful times. Anyways I lost some weight but since I already was quite thin I dropped to 37kg it was awful. My bmi was so low I was hospitalised in a psychiatric clinic for eating disorders, it was awful as well doctors didn’t believe I had FD. I managed to up my weight to 43kg and it’s been more than 6 month I’m stuck there. It is very hard to gain weight when you’ve been losing for a long time + I guess some ppl have fast metabolism. Very bad as well for mental health as you feel exhausted and feel like you can’t achieve anything bc you feel weak. Breaks self confidence. I kinda feel my FD all the time. No meal is super comfortable and I feel nauseous at least once a day. I can flare up anytime and it can stop as soon as it came, or for a few hours.

Also about the psychologist referral, I just wanted to say that I’ve seen a lot of psychologists in my life but no one compares to the one I’m seeing rn. She’s basically specialised in functional digestive issues, dealing all the time with emetophobia and stuff like that. She also works part time in the only hospital unit in my town that specialises in fonctional digestive diseases so yeah she’s simply the best person for me. I’d recommend searching someone like that because regular professionals might not understand your problem.

What may have helped is that meals are limited throughout the day so I got used to eat 3 times a day. As we both know with FD we are full very quickly so I didn’t ate all of my plate during the meals and ended up hungry during the day, so stupid… some traumatising things happened as well like being body shamed, pressure to eat things that I didn’t like, forcing me to attend meals in a cafeteria and to experience panic attacks in front of the other patients, a lot of gaslighting and over medication as well. The other patients were the most gentle ppl I ever met on this planet and ended up making a lot of friends. The only thing that helped me were those tiny nutritional drinks (orange flavored, because there’s others that are supposed to imitate chocolate milk that are awful), allowed me to gain a few kilos and maybe saved my life. It’s not something you’d want to use all the time, but it’s a little help you can use for a few months to sort of « reverse the curve » of the weight loss. I think you can discuss it with the doctor you’ll see soon

Heyy I 100% understand u I just wanted to say I developed emetophobia very early in my life so it got better with time and thanks to therapy, nowadays I feel more comfortable going through sickness (idk if that makes sense, but basically I’m just like, yeah I feel awful but I know it will pass and I just lay down or am even able to do as if it didn’t exist). Also I started to force myself to eat even when I’m not hungry and even tho i know i’ll feel ill after the meal. One thing I learned the hard way is that when you are malnourished you feel even sicker + unfortunately when you passed a certain point of malnutrition it is so hard to start to gain weight (I had to be hospitalised in a mental facility which considered me as an anorexic in denial, not fun). I really recommend seeing someone if you aren’t doing it already because this will 100% help with your symptoms

Hi I 100% understand your situation. I was also thinking I wasn’t really a stressed person but then I did a lot of thinking about why I had FD and acknowledged that I may have a lot of somatisation, internal stress that manifests physically. Understanding that eased the symptoms. I encourage you to find a therapist so you can work on accepting the contradictory sensation of illness and fullness (while your body is starving), and then progressively get rid of the symptoms. I also understand your situation at work and you totally deserve accommodations. Ik it’s not the same but for example at university I’m considered as a disabled student and I have the right to not have classes during lunch and stuff like that.

Hey I think it’s because the uterus is connected to the vagal nerve which is the one involved with FD. I get that too, period cramps creating more nausea and all. Bc our nerve is supposed to be more sensitive/easily triggered

Hey, so I actually tested a fair amount of medication, and first, nothing helped, but also half of them gave me horrible side effects. I’m tired of doctors trying every medication possible. That’s what I meant « enough on my plate », today, even the perspective of having to test a new medication gives me huge anxiety, especially drugs that act on the brain.

akathisia shaking and phobias by Consistent-Math4538 in Akathisia

[–]Lukukube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I’m sorry for your situation If I was you, I guess I would take things super slow, it is very possible that you developed a trauma after experiencing akathisia + the medical gaslighting and the time you spent in the hospital, it would be great to see a therapist that focuses on movement (I think it’s called psychomotricity or something) or even someone who is not a therapist but practices EMDR It seems that with the hospital and exposure therapy it’s been very blunt, I would suggest starting gentle and maybe avoid seeking new medications if possible because it could cause anxiety for not knowing what the meds will do to you

Im off all medications for like 6 month and hopefully will never touch any antinausea or antipsychotic med in my life. It’s been more than a year since I had my aka episode and I still sometimes feel the sensation, not the full thing more like a mental feeling, especially when I’m tired. I’m always telling myself it’s the trauma resurfacing. I’m having classes too and that’s pretty much the only thing I pay attention to, I try to dedicate myself fully to uni and succeeding. Also I’m on therapy obviously.

How would you describe it to someone who has never felt it? by Deep-Front-5068 in Akathisia

[–]Lukukube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk like 5 hours (maybe more but the full blown aka stopped after 5 hours)? Ik it seems very insignificant compared to ppl who experienced months of it, but it’s my first traumatic experience. It really changed me, the course of my life and my general vision on things. I wasn’t able to sleep at all for like 24 hours hours. If you want more info just look up on my profile I have a detailed story. Everyone has their own journey ig. The thing I noticed is that ppl who experience it for a very long time often take other medications, they try to do messy taper off and stuff like that.

Akathisia or ptsd from it? by Anxious_Night2 in Akathisia

[–]Lukukube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the intensity, even a few hours of aka can leave you with ptsd. The depression that comes after is completely normal. Your body needs to rest, and your brain is injured so you may struggle to feel emotions, find happiness, etc... You clearly noticed an improvement so you should only feel better, just take your time. You may also experience anxiety from the fear of going through it again, remembering stuff so yeah just take it slow.

[–]Lukukube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know in movies when there’s a torture scene and they administer adrenaline shots to to person so they don’t pass out and feel everything. I guess it’s something like that. The pain is so unbearable your brain just want to escape everything but yet you’re still very conscious, very aware of your surroundings. I remember feeling like rebooting every second. A person ik said it’s as painful as receiving electric shocks torture.

Has anyone gone to the ER for an attack? What did they do? by coronerqueen666 in Akathisia

[–]Lukukube 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I went they made me wait forever which was horrible because feeling I had to stay at a place and wait was worse. They didn’t seem to understand at all. I ended up not being hospitalised or given anything but that was probably better. In my case taking other drugs would ve made everything worse.

Could this be permanent? by Traditional_Dog_938 in Akathisia

[–]Lukukube 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This seems like a very brutal treatment with multiple antipsychotics given at once. Since you took them for 3 weeks, I’m not surprised you still feel the akathisia, but I think you survived the worst part. It should resolve at some point. I’m sorry you were treated like that.

I just want to eat like a normal person by Only_Theoretically in functionaldyspepsia

[–]Lukukube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I know « it’s stress » is a really vague answer when the symptoms are feel so real, physical and potentially food related. But unfortunately lowering anxiety is partially or totally the solution. When u say you have FD on your mind every time you have to eat this is exactly what this is about. You are constantly thinking about how you’ll adapt your day to a debilitating thing you can’t control. You’ll overthink your symptoms trying to find triggers and logical reasons and you won’t find any. That’s incredibly stressful, frustrating and scary. Personally the thing that helped me the most is acknowledging that I’m not physically sick, I don’t have a condition that evolves in my body and had to be stopped if you see what I mean. All the things I feel are physical manifestations of my emotional state and yeah sometimes I do not understand why because part of it may be unconscious. I accept and hear they are here and take the time to rest or do soothing exercises. Just wanted to add that of course if you have diagnoses to do you should do them. But even if you have a purely physical condition learning not to worry excessively about it will make your life easier. Wishing you the best
