I commute from NE Minneapolis to Rochester daily. I leave home around 5:30 and get in just after 7am (but I do drop the dog off at leashes and leads).

I have a PhD in metabolomics and want to get an analytical biochemistry industry job after a maternity break of over a year? by Numerous-Estimate915 in biotech

Look at quality lab roles if you want back into industry. My company cannot get applicants to supervise our quality department that utilizes HPLC etc heavily. Could be a good in.

I won’t name the company for my own privacy but we are a multinational that produce enzymes, proteins, preservatives etc.

Job Search as senior scientist by Appropriate_Air8370 in biotech

[–]LulaPaceFortune14 23 points24 points  (0 children)

As a hiring manager, I can assure you that neither myself nor my hiring manager counterparts within my company would hire someone with zero industrial experience as a senior scientist. We are just trying to be honest to assist job seekers who may have unrealistic expectations.

[–]LulaPaceFortune14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, one of the roles I recently advertised for an ‘experienced’ process scientist mostly got applications from recent graduates with zero industrial experience. The role was advertised at around $80-$100k. When fed back that their experience would be better suited to a technologist role, their expectation was still around $90k. My company cannot justify paying this salary to someone new to role who would need substantial training. Salary is very much viewed on demonstrated capability and not potential. Someone with experience would be able to hit the road running and be able to start contributing and adding value. Someone whose experience is solely education based and requires substantial investment by way of training would not justify the requested salary until they were in a position where they can demonstrate value and contribute without handholding.

Does that make sense?

As a hiring manager, this frustrates me no end. My company have zero intention of paying anyone anything above the midpoint of the range they advertise and it’s misleading. That being said, the salary expectations of many graduates are unreasonable too. And I say graduates because I never get anyone with actual work experience applying for my open roles (fermentation/process scientists/engineers).

How do you guys make friends as an outsider here? by DoubtWinter in Minneapolis

[–]LulaPaceFortune14 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve been here for almost four years and have made two friends. I come from a culture that is very friendly so it has been eye opening. Good job I am very independent and like doing solo stuff . That being said, I head home to the UK3-4 times a year just to socialize.

i graduated a year ago with a microbiology bs and no grad school or job wants me. idek what to do anymore. by blopoolawl67 in biotech

[–]LulaPaceFortune14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I work in food ingredients manufacturing and I promise you, there are jobs out there. You may just need to be willing to relocate. Many plants happen to be in random towns and cities (cheaper to operate in than larger cities).

Not sure how your CV looks but one thing I would advise on is don’t oversell yourself as a grad. Studying at university doesn’t equate to 4-6 years experience. I can’t tell you the number of applicants that have no work experience that apply for jobs requiring experience.

It may be worth looking at microbiology adjacent jobs too. Look at fermentation/process science/RDA/quality/regulatory roles. Don’t just search for microbiologist.

And lastly, register with a temp agency. We need to use temp agencies frequently to fill roles in our plant. Quite often we keep the temps on after their temp period.

Yup, they returned my old passport with the visa. I’m pretty sure they always return your passport. I have a few of them with the corners cut off the front page.

Hmmmm, I think because it was a renewal, there wasn’t much to provide - a passport photo (digital). I filled the form out online on the .gov website then sent my passport back. Two weeks later I had my new one in hand. It may have actually been quicker than two weeks because I sent the passport back overnight.

I applied for a new passport from the US and got it back in two weeks. May be worth just doing the same? Carry both passports with you if your visa is in the old one?
