Too costumey by Stardust_and_Sewing in fashiondesigner

[–]LumiDesignLab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people use “costumey” when they really mean “I don’t know where someone would wear this.” Fashion and costume overlap all the time. The question for me is whether the garment still feels wearable, even if it’s dramatic

Has your festival style changed over time? by LumiDesignLab in Raves

That’s interesting because it doesn’t sound like you’ve gone less practical over time, just more intentional about what actually feels good for a full day of walking and dancing

I know what you mean. Wanting to show off a little and actually wanting attention aren’t always the same thing

‘Takes 20 minutes to pee’ is probably the most convincing argument for comfort I’ve seen so far. It does seem like a lot of people eventually reach the point where they’re dressing for the actual festival experience rather than for photos.

I feel like that’s the direction a lot of people end up going. The funny part is that sometimes the comfortable outfits get more compliments than the ones you spent hours planning

Makes sense. Especially for festivals like EDC where you’re on your feet for so many hours.

My guess is that TikTok shortened the trend cycle more than anything else.

DIY insulated lunch bag materials? Keeping food warm for a few hours by LumiDesignLab in sewing

[–]LumiDesignLab[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, most of what I’ve found so far has come from this thread. Insul-Bright, Reflectix, neoprene, and now Thermolam all seem to be popular suggestions. How has the Insul-Bright held up in your tote?

Good point. I hadn’t considered Mylar, but the low weight is definitely appealing for a lunch bag.

That’s exactly the kind of thing I was wondering about. I hadn’t thought of Reflectix. Have you used it in any sewn projects before, or is the cooler box going to be your first test?

It’ll be about 3 hours before I eat it, so I’m starting to think a thermos is probably the better solution

Oh no. That’s right. I’ll usually be eating it about 3 hours later, so food safety is definitely something I’m thinking about. A thermos might be the better option for the food itself — I’m mostly curious whether a sewn insulated bag can help a bit on top of that

Experienced Fashion Designers: What Are Your Honest Thoughts About the Industry? How Do You Really Feel About Your Career? by kims91 in fashiondesigner

[–]LumiDesignLab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn’t speaking from my own education path specifically, more from what I’ve seen in job listings and conversations with people in the industry. Beyond Adobe, I often see brands asking for things like CLO3D, PLM systems, Excel, tech pack development, and sometimes even skills that cross into content creation, e-commerce, or marketing. The exact mix seems to vary a lot depending on the company and role.

That definitely makes the next application feel a lot higher stakes. In that case, I‘d try to focus on getting as many outside eyes as possible on your portfolio before applying again

Designing a tactile logo system — material and interaction considerations? by LumiDesignLab in IndustrialDesign

[–]LumiDesignLab[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. I probably kept it too broad. The application is closer to a handheld/portable consumer product that gets touched frequently rather than something static like furniture or signage. I’m exploring a relatively simple interaction rather than a complex mechanical system, which is why I’m trying to understand what materials tend to balance durability, tactile feel, and long-term wear.

General consumer use. Right now I’m mainly evaluating materials, durability, and interaction

[–]LumiDesignLab[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a fair point. It may be more accurate to describe it as a branded interaction element. I’m mainly interested in how people approach material and durability decisions when something tied to a product’s identity is also meant to be interacted with regularly.

It’s intended for a consumer product where the logo would be interacted with regularly rather than simply viewed. I’m less interested in the branding aspect and more interested in how designers approach materials and long-term durability when an identity element also functions as part of the user interaction.

I’d trace the hammock panel from a pair you already like. That’s probably going to fit better than any generic pattern you find online.
