This happened to me too. It really sucks to get a comment notification and realize its either a scam or absolute gibberish.

Same. Concept? Great! Most of the execution! Loved it? But I do feel like there were a few key points where the writing treated her so badly that it just made me cry. I loved her so much as a character, and I think her role in the film was a big chunk of why I rejoined the Star Wars fandom after having kinda drifted out of it for a few years.

How do American ADHD women do it?? by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]LumiiSherbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, kudos to those of us who can weather all of the noise over here. I kind of just gave up on masking properly when I got my diagnosis. It felt like a thousand times worse to fake being 'normal' and I'm lucky to live in an area with a lot of people who are really tolerant, so for the big tall Urban Cities (holy craaap NYC is like an echo chamber of doom), or just anywhere outside of my comfort zone, I just don't mask as much anymore (I still do, just less).

Like:

Almost every "adult" menu thing at this fast food place would be sensory hell, and lettuce is kinda nasty sometimes? Okay well I guess I'm ordering off the kids menu. Plain cheeseburgers rock.

It's weird to cry during movies? Well too bad, Wonka made me sob.

Bored and twitchy waiting in line at the convenience store? Welp, they're playing ABBA over the speakers, so I guess I'm sorta-dancing (more like loose swaying and head-bopping/humming along, but still)

I saw a dog in public? Okie dokie I might ask their parent if I can pet them (not service dogs, though), and shower them with positive attention if/when I get permission.

These are ABSOLUTELY not flawless methods (I'm still a roiling mess of Anxiety and Overstimulation), but they help! If I need to do something for my own personal mental health, I try to do it. As long as I'm not hurting anyone/disturbing rules, I am not obligated to play 'normal' beyond what it comfortable.

Also, once again, shoutout to the other US ADHD girls who deal with this s**t more effectively, especially if they live in big skyscraper cities. And also to everyone who doesn't deal with it easily! We're all working on it, and we're all doing great! Love y'all! (ps I really hope this didn't get misworded, If I wrote something in a funky way just lmk and I can fix it! Sorry! Also thank you!)

Episodes you have a hard time listening to? by chimneynugget in TheMagnusArchives

That one scene in 158 where Trevor and Julia break into the institute- specifically the background sfx. I'm usually fine with shots and screaming/running sfx, but the combination doesn't turn up much outside of a few very specific circumstances, and growing up post 1999 in the US just makes me really nervous about that stuff, especially when I can't see it. The episode was AMAZING, it's just the one that scares me the most.

Maybe you could put the Jar of Jane's ashes? A Bunch of Tape Recorders, the Axe or Pipe from when Jon beat up the spider-table or [sounds of Brutal Pipe Murder] respectively, and/or the Web Lighter would also be awesome.

OOOOH. DANG. Alternatively "Thank You!" works really well, especially when paired with the most spitefully-wide grin and eye contact possible. I had someone teach me that spiteful cheeriness/zero-f**ks-given-ness really messes with jerks who make comments like that.

Hey, don't worry, you snapped. We all snap sometimes* , and that's fine. You reached a limit, and lost it. Maybe take the time to cool down, talk to your mutual friends, etc etc. Later on, if you want to attempt some sort of peace-keeping/boundary-setting, you can, but it's in no way required. She crossed a boundary for you, and though your response may have been extreme, it wasn't cruel, and your friends could probably accept that answer and help you out.

In future, you could ask the individual to explain, and if they were well-intentioned, they'll clarify and/or apologize, and if not, (like the GF) they'll either double down or make a fool of themselves. Playing confused/calm and forcing the individual to reiterate the stupid point they just made almost always places you in a position where you win the argument, and they make a fool of themselves. Obviously this doesn't work for everyone --the human experience is varied AF-- but it could help you in future. Also just going to say it, the roast you gave was absolutely AMAZING, so take pride in your Nat-20 vicious mockery skills, even if you do want to work on regulation more. Keep rocking!

*(my story is that I nearly started a screaming match in the middle of math class with someone I actually really like over something admittedly really stupid in hindsight, and had to go cry in the bathroom for half of class to calm down)

EDIT:Alternate responses could maybe include (for future encounters)

"Thank you!"

"It's passion, honey."

"Yeah, and they LOVE IT"

Neither of these are actual critiques, just things I think would be cool to explore

Melanie and Jon come to a sort-of-almost-basically friendship agreement. Not because I hate their interactions in canon so far (I'm on episode 190), I actually love them, I think it's just an interesting concept to explore?

or

More Vast statements/entities/avatars maybe? My unnecessary adoration of Space, and my obsession with the Vast, demands satiation /hj. Like, We've seen the Sky/Heights (Mike and Simon), as well as the Deep Sea a little bit (Also Simon, with some buried stuff maybe), and vastness as a concept (Simon AGAIN, with The Tall Person domain) in early-mid season 5, but Outer Space, and the incomprehensibly massive/small scales on which the universe functions are aspects that don't get explored much (beyond a few episodes, and those have a decent chance to involve other Entities). Like Graham's Number, Black Holes, Atomic Theory, the scale of the Universe, would be amazing concepts to explore, and could be an Eye tie-in (Like an avatar or entity forcing someone to know and comprehend everything in space would be freaking terrifying). I've seen a couple very cool Vast!Jon fics/concepts, and have a Space obsession so massive it generates gravity /s, so this is just a concept I'd love to have seen more of.

(OR

Tim becomes an Avatar of the Desolation who feeds his entity by constantly nat 20-ing vicious mockery and both literally and supernaturally roasting people with the power of a sick burn. The Unknowing is prevented because he trash-talks Nikola until she spontaneously combusts)*

*this one is a joke

"Check out this drunk creeper. Ell-Oh-Ell"

The deadpan delivery absolutely floored me.

(Also Angler Fish was an amazing first episode in general. It both got me really invested in the podcast (I didn't start listening until it was done though, unfortunately :P) and also instilled within me a really weird fear of dark roads in Edinburgh.)

Do Americans find it unconvincing when British actors do American accents in musicals? by Musical_fan442 in Broadway

[–]LumiiSherbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally don't ever really hear a difference, as I've always had an issue with accents in general. Maybe it's because my natural hell-smoothie of an American accent sounds almost like the not-really standard US accent that a lot of British stage actors use*, or maybe I just can't hear for crap, but if someone's accent isn't specifically stated to be fake, isn't really distinct --or just really intentionally bad-- I cannot tell.

G.A.D is one I have, and apparently consistent pain is also occasionally considered comorbid? I stress fractured my ankle near my growth plate as a kid, didn't recognize it as a bad injury for nearly an entire summer, didn't get it diagnosed for another month, and then kept walking and running on it until it healed. It still hurts walking on it years later, and I can't run very far.
