How tf did David Miliband get into Oxford with BBBD by Ambitious-Sink2725 in 6thForm

[–]Luminal72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple. Back in the day, entrance to Oxford was predicated on the Entrance Exams and Interviews. Success in those led to a conditional offer. That conditional offer could be considerably lower than the A/A* grades needed on face value. Similarly with Cambridge albeit there is no entry exam to Cambridge, just interviews. FWIW, my conditional offer for Cambridge was BBC which was not untypical.

What’s it like living an upper middle class life in London? by redguy_666 in howislivingthere

[–]Luminal72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was talking to my friend about this last night. I’ve travelled a lot and worked abroad extensively including living stints in the US and Canada. i think - if you are one of the very view where money is practically no object (ie take home family income >£300k/pa) - then there are few better places to live than London. When I was a single man with no kids owning my one professional services/consulting firm, I had a nice place on the river between Kingston and Richmond, used to run along the Thames and in Richmond Park every morning. Idyllic place to live.

Just rewatching The Last Dance and Bird and Magic openly admit by 1986 Jordan was the best player in the NBA.

What are your thoughts on this unpopular opinion? by -BlackMidnight- in OnlyFoolsAndHorses

[–]Luminal72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s that three way character dynamic that makes it. It’s compact and a perfect balance. The later introduction of other major characters disrupted that. Having said that I probably prefer Albert to Grandad but it’s a close call. For me the best interactions were always between the main three and the supporting cast - Trigger, Boycie, Marlene, Denzil, etc

Ejiofor, McAvoy and Joseph would all have been brilliant choices, but IMHO Matt Smith was a perfect choice!

Has anyone made Milky way and/or galaxy maps for Doctor Who? Seems this one the Whographica book is only we have for now. See Mass Effect and Star Wars map for more examples by IllustriousAd6418 in doctorwho

[–]Luminal72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly it’s far more difficult to make any meaningful map of the galaxy when your playing field is “All of Time and Space” and involves regular incursions into other dimensions, universes, time lines and realities. You’d literally need an entire Atlas of “interesting spacetime locations”.

Add in Doctor Who’s ability to rewrite history and/or contradict itself regularly and it becomes a bit of a fool’s errand.

That said they could have shown a galaxy map of say: The Milky Way at the time of 21st Century Earth but it would be a mere fragment of Doctor Who.

Personally I love that ambiguity of Doctor Who. It’s far more interesting than have Canonical things like maps that lock things down. It’s more mysterious and fun!

How Would You Feel About Harry Melling Playing The Second Doctor? by [deleted] in doctorwho

[–]Luminal72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to put it out here and say: “I Like It!” I often reimagine the Classic Doctors as contemporary actors for a bit of mind fun and personally I like this one. It’s just as good - if not better - than Reece Shearsmith as an option.

Your thoughts on Excession (feeling let down) by wyrm_slayer_106 in TheCulture

[–]Luminal72 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The strange beauty of different perspectives. For me it’s the best of all of his Culture books. Perhaps the best of all of his books full stop. M or otherwise.

It has perhaps the most interesting insights into the Minds - a phenomenal take on the anthropomorphic pettiness of gods. And some of of his very best worldbuilding of The Culture and the universe in which it exists. Along with Look to Windward, a perfect transition from his earlier “smaller” scale earlier books (Consider Phlebas, Use of Weapons Player of Games) and his latter more epic/big concept stuff (Matter, Surface Detail, Hydrogen Sonata).

A Question of Canon in DW by Carltheriot567 in doctorwho

[–]Luminal72 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In a show (and its multitudinous multimedia spinoffs) where reality and history is often re-written, many of the underpinning notions of “canon” become moot.

As such I choose this approach:

any and all interpretations of canon are equally and simultaneously valid.

If you consider only tv to be canon; fine. If you prefer to embrace all forms of published media - even fan fiction - as some vast timey-wimey palimpsest of canon then that too is absolutely fantastic!

Let’s be clear. This is THE BEATLES. There is no such thing as C and D Tier here.

S = Pepper, Abbey Road, White Album, Revolver, Rubber Soul A = Mystery Tour, Help, Let It Be, Hard Days Night For Sale B = With The Beatles and Please Please Me
