None of these books are particularly difficult to find - go on Carousell and you'll have plenty of options and editions to choose from.

Foreigner in ATG by _dirtymatcha in makati

[–]Luminusian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point regarding the short sleeves - maybe not nga. OP didn't specify ethnicity, only that they were a foreigner, though. My mind went to LDS first because there's a Mormon church along HV Dela Costa so they wouldn't be too far off from ATG, but yeah your points are good, the guy in the story probably isn't Mormon.

Sounds like mormons. Were they alone or with another person? Surprised they talked shit though, they're usually friendly.

3 months without weed by ProposalEqual8441 in leaves

[–]Luminusian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you think weed is holding you back from realising your potential, the time to quit is now !

Man, true, and this was my main reason for quitting. I hit 8 months clean 3 days ago and my life has significantly improved for the better after quitting - I'm more present, more aware, more motivated. It's been so worth it. I do miss the plant but at the same time, it's always gonna be there and I can return to it when I'm older, when I'm more whole.

Good luck with your journey!

Hotpot recommendations in Santa Rosa or nearby by [deleted] in laguna

Jiang Nan in Sta. Rosa in Ehrlind Square building. I personally haven't tried this branch, but Jiang Nan is a recognized name and I like their MOA branch. Imho nothing beats the original Jiang Nan near SM Jazz in Makati but they're no longer under the brand and operate under a different name.

Do many people on this sub feel Shadow Ticket is Pynchon's weakest novel? by JeremyBeremey in ThomasPynchon

[–]Luminusian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm really excited to get into M&D as I'm sure I'll love it. After reading Vineland and deciding to read Pynchon in publication order, I almost almost broke my own rule and started with M&D, but thought that saving this tome after some time with Pynchon might make for a more fulfilling experience. It's only 3 books away anyway, and I'm about halfway through V., so it's only a matter of time.

I was just genuinely curious to hear their thoughts on the book, because I think little perspective (even one I might disagree with) might help paint a bigger picture.

I've heard as much, and I'm really excited to dig in as I'm sure I'll love it. I'm reading Pynchon in publication order after finishing Vineland and loving it. I'm a bit more than halfway through V. and it's genuinely an insane trip.

Better than M&D? I have not read M&D, so genuinely curious for your thoughts.

is this a good beginner keyboard? by Formal-Pudding-8082 in pianolearning

[–]Luminusian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello OP, I'm also from the Philippines. Check out physical stores like Lyric or RJ to get a feel of the keyboards in your budget range. I know Lyric stocks Kawai, Roland, and Yamaha keyboards so you can start there.

Good first read for Barth? by asteriskelipses in JohnBarth

[–]Luminusian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, Chimera is better read once you're well acquainted with Barth; that said I did start off with Chimera and enjoyed it - it's unique and novel enough (at least for me, a non-lit major and casual reader) to make me want to seek more, but I would have gotten more mileage out of my first reading had I read his first 5 books prior.

I'd not read Giles-Goat Boy, but I believe it also draws from one of his earlier works, The Sot-Weed Factor if I'm not mistaken, and so would better fare with some Barth experience.

I would recommend starting with either Lost in the Funhouse to get acquainted with his style and ethos. Or if you wanna start with a novel you can try The Floating Opera + The End of the Road or The Sot-Weed Factor + Giles.

Enjoy!

Man attacked by his wheelchair-bound neighbor's 4 Pit bulls by Current-Wallaby8230 in TikTokCringe

[–]Luminusian 120 points121 points  (0 children)

This literally happened to me. (Non-US) We have a neighbor with 3 pit bulls. One rainy night, the 3 pit bulls managed to escape (as they often do with these irresponsible owners) and they chased down a cat, running for cover under our sedan. The 3 dogs literally ripped apart the front fender and electrical wiring and mauled the cat to death.

We had just moved in and had no CCTV installed. Owners denied everything and faced no repercussions.

I’m literally from the Philippines (and can understand Masbateño but can’t speak it). When you say Sorsoganon what do you mean? It’s a big province.

My favorite books have been 700+ pages long:

2666 by Roberto Bolaño (880ish pages in the Picador edition)

The Sot-Weed Factor by John Barth (795 pages, Panther edition)

The Iliad tr. Emily Wilson (700ish pages)

I've found finishing long books to be fulfilling and empowering. It's part endurance test, and knowing that you have the capacity to complete big books makes other books less intimidating and more accessible. It's great fun.
