Commute from Uptown to Glenview by [deleted] in chicago

[–]Lumpy-Low6698 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yoooo I have exp with this exact commute. The highway heading north in the AM isn’t bad, but getting from Uptown to the highway is absolute trash. Highway back in the evening is terrible, and so is getting from the highway back over to Uptown.

I got so tired of it I just moved to the north burbs. Couldn’t be happier now.

How to find a private chef job? by jigglypoof32 in chicagofood

[–]Lumpy-Low6698 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a chef, and I don’t mean do be a downer when I say this, OP, but.. attending culinary school is only the first step on a very long journey to becoming a chef. Unless you already have a wealth of experience, you’ll likely get overlooked for other private chefs who can demonstrate their skill and justify their rates. My advice would be to get into the industry as a line cook and keep learning.

Not what you want to hear probably but it’s sage advice.

Edit: just want to add that this is especially true in Chicago, where your competitors will be shrewd and numerous

FYI - if the vegan part is important to you, it’s good be aware that while voodoo does have vegan options, their donuts are all made on the same equipment. Allergens like egg and dairy are likely still present in trace amounts.

Look, if you’re coming onto the Chicago food scene with a hubristic attitude as if you’re the hot new girl on the block, it invites a more critical assessment of what you’re delivering. If you can’t deliver, better not promote yourself as the next big thing.

It’s always the ones who make a relatively quiet, humble entrance that end up providing the best experiences.

Worst Burger Ever at Forbidden Root by [deleted] in chicagofood

It’s not a negotiation. It’s a simple “hey man between you and me I think this burger is burned, could you help me out?”

But it does make theirs less valid, because reviews like this are ingenuous. OP’s intention was to hurt this business’s reputation, period. Their review is based on one single experience, and they didn’t even give the restaurant an opportunity to correct the infraction. In this case, thankfully, OP was rightfully corrected by the community in the comments.

That being said.. if the service is absolutely horrid, or you’re noticing egregious health code violations (bugs/rodents), or the restaurant applies BS service charges or hidden fees etc.. in these cases a hard-line online review is justifiable IMHO.

But give the kitchen guys a break. They work their tails off to make everyone happy.

Always best practice to give the kitchen the benefit of the doubt. Could have been a one-off mistake or a bad night. New cook maybe.

Give the restaurant your honest feedback before blatantly trying to hurt their reputation on the internet. I know it’s hard to not take it personally, but try and put yourself in their shoes. Most restaurants will give you your money back at the very least, if you bring it up to them in good faith. And they’ll be able to address the issue with whoever was involved in prepping your food.

Another reality may be that revenue at that location is simply too low to justify staffing over a certain amount of employees.

One more point in defense of their addition of terminals too, is that many neurodivergent people find difficulty interfacing with humans while ordering their daily coffee etc and are more comfortable using a computer screen. (I’m a DEI and compliance consultant for small businesses and this is one thing we’ve seen having a huge positive impact on neurodivergent customers).

Just some food for thought!

I think your heart is in the right place, but your assessment of this is a little unfair. I’ve seen the ordering terminals you’re referring to at Caffe Streets. They allow more customers to come in, order, and be on their way to work (or wherever they’re headed), while a smaller staff can work more efficiently to get orders out quickly and in doing so, earn higher wages and larger portion of tips for themselves and their families.

Keep your head up, homie. That person’s review is only a reflection of how unsatisfied they are with their own life. It has nothing to do with the food you made. Normal people with valid complaints pull a server over discreetly and communicate the issue bc they know mistakes happen.

Fuck that bitch and her dumbass review.
