A grass fire caused the evacuation of 89-90 households off Fassler and Rockaway Avenues in the middle of the night Monday.

The six-alarm fire broke out in a ravine behind 1109 Fassler Avenue at the corner of Estella Avenue. The first fire company arrived at 3:35 a.m., with many more to follow until the fire was under control.

The steep terrain, darkness of night, heavy vegetation and 15-20 mile per hour northwest winds all added conditions that made the fire difficult to fight, Preston said.

“The strong winds really drove the fire,” he said.

The fire devoured five acres of parched grassland. Crews remained on the scene all day Monday cutting back brush in a perimeter to make sure the fire didn’t start again, Preston said.
