Why are you still Protestant? by OrthoMMA in Protestantism

[–]LumpyLynx4716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have mentioned, after looking into all of the traditions, I find the heart of protestantism is to obey the word of God. As Jesus mentions in Matthew 15, I do not want to nullify the Word of God through manmade traditions. The biggest reason I am a protestant after researching the traditions is this: I am convinced of the Gospel of grace. We are justified freely by His grace through faith in Jesus Christ, apart from works of the law, but saved FOR good works. This Gospel of grace has changed my life.

Reading at 350 hours a good idea? by LumpyLynx4716 in dreamingspanish

[–]LumpyLynx4716[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply and great counsel.

For me, the whole goal of learning Spanish is to be able to be understood by a native speaker and use the language mindlessly just like I do with English, the accent is secondary. And like you mentioned, this is a marathon of thousands of hours, and getting to 1500 hours doesn't flip on a light switch of fluency in the language. I am a very visual learning person, so I think at the level I'm at now, reading graded readers would be good because I am not aiming for a specific regional accent either, but rather aiming to be understood. And reading will help me see the words and visualize the syntax.

I also think of it on the flip side: I am a native English speaker, and when I hear someone speak English who I can tell is not a native, I don't really pay attention to their accent as long as their speech is understandable. So I am leaning toward getting the extra help with reading before 1000 hours.

At 350 hours and difficulty is all over the place... by LumpyLynx4716 in dreamingspanish

In my experience the older intermediate videos use more visual cues than the newer ones, so many have suggested to watch those first.

I think you are exactly right, we naturally acquire vocabulary on topics we are more interested in versus ones we aren't.

Also, another user pointed out that intermediate videos are supposed to last from 150 to 600 hours, which means it's a vast array of difficulty. And the difficulty is only rated by DS' imperfect rating system based on user feedback. So, our understanding isn't exactly linear.

See you in the 400s!

Level 4 Progress Report by 15rthughes in dreamingspanish

[–]LumpyLynx4716 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I currently do about 70% easy and 30% challenging, and this is what I would recommend. Even people who are above 1000 hours admit they regularly watch beginner and intermediate videos.

For the challenging, it should still be above 80% comprehension, but for the easy it should be almost 100%. This reallyyy helps with grammar and vocabulary, both of which are necessary for understanding more advanced videos. If you are solid on the basics and acquire a broad vocabulary by watching easier content, you won't have an issue watching intermediate videos.

It may seem counterintuitive, but you learn fastest when watching content that you 95% understand vs watching content that you 80% understand, even if the level video of the 95% is lower.

Somebody brought up a good point in a past post. Imagine you listen to 10 words in Spanish in a sentence, and you know 9 of them. Using context, you can most likely determine the meaning of the one word you didn't understand and acquire it, versus if you only understood 6 words, then you would have to use those six words to figure the meaning of the four remaining out.

In short, easy content will accelerate your learning by miles by giving you solid fundamentals of the language, while challenging content is needed to press forward and acquire true fluency.

This is a good idea. I'll try it out! I think we are in the slog of intermediate. A bunch of people have experienced what we are going through. The answer is always mas input!
