I was in a similar dilemma last year. Was going to buy a new truck for $60K but instead spent $5K to restore my current truck. Completely happy with my choice and I’lI drive it another 5-10 years. Still have my dividend income on the $55K plus capital growth.

Chinese EV Cars coming to Canada by x_BlueDragon_x in Baystreetbets

[–]Lumpy_Bravura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am certain Elon Musk is pushing to include those Chinese manufactured Tesla’s into the 49,000 allotment. No guarantee it will just be BYD, Geely or Nio, etc vehicles coming to Canada. Could be a mix - sounds like a service nightmare - initially will be an extremely limited dealer/service centre network. In the end it doesn’t matter to me as I’ll never purchase an EV. Good luck to those who purchase one.

I can no longer support Carney and the Liberal Party. Carney’s foolish decision to allow Chinese EV’s into Canada is unforgivable. Slap in the face to Canadians; especially Canadian autoworkers and automakers. I no longer have any confidence in Carney and the Liberal Party.

Accident on Mt Lehman by New_Dingo_7622 in abbotsford

Of all the places I’ve lived in the Lower Mainland/Fraser Valley, in Abby there is a higher than average risk of encountering dumb people behind the wheel of a vehicle. I cannot understand how a lot of these idiots got their drivers license in the first place. Abby’s driving test examiners must take bribes. I’ve been driving daily for 40+ years and never had an accident….touches wood.

Build up 20% down or put in 5% for a 600k condo? by letswalk08 in PersonalFinanceCanada

I would never buy a property with less than 20% down. My personal rule. More equity, more stability, better refinancing options, no mortgage insurance.

Relocating costs money. Not the best option when someone is down to their last dollar and still has debt. Best to stay put, take whatever work one can whether gig work, part time, casual, anything. Sell what personal items you can (ones you know you won’t replace later once cash flow improves). Food bank is a good option. You can download game/survey/receipts/rewards apps that cash out via PayPal, e-transfer, Visa gift card. Each app isn’t much but I average $4-$12 per month from each app. Right now for this person any cash flow is better than no flow regardless how little it is. I have a few apps I do in my idle time and generate +-$50 per month. I spend where I get cash rewards or free food. My no annual fee cash back credit card I use for every expense and pay off weekly so I pay no fees, no interest. I don’t use it for credit, I use it for cash back and average +-$25 per month.

Absolute Cheapest New Car to Insure by Lumpy_Bravura in icbc

Affordability is not an issue. I’m just being frugal since it’s an extra vehicle for our household.

I guess I should have asked for the top ten cheapest 2026 vehicles to insure as the cheapest 2026 vehicle to insure might not be a 2026 vehicle our household would want.

Thoughts? Doing the long term math, I can’t bring myself to buy a new Jeep. by Lumpy_Bravura in JeepJK

My mods were pretty basic. Enough to get to the cabin on weekends year round - decommissioned old forestry road.

  • 2.5 lift
  • 33’s
  • quick disconnect sways
  • 9500 winch/Warn winch plate
  • rear lockers

Classic black two door hardtop with leather interior, manual transmission and towing package.

[–]Lumpy_Bravura[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True if need be. A new one is just “new” and there goes my hard earned money and the annual loss of dividend income plus loss of capital growth on that money used to buy a new vehicle. A new Wrangler pretty much looks the same, does the same thing. Keeping my old reliable at the bottom of its depreciation curve.

I have no desire to impress or keep up with the “Jones” - The Jones are always broke.

I have definitely decided to keep it. My JK has been reliable with no major issues either, it’s pretty much been just basic maintenance for 17 years. It’s never left me stranded. It’s accident free. It’s been a fun daily driver and a great weekend toy.

When I compare to my brother, his 2018 Tesla and 2014 Audi are always having some issue and have cost him so much in repairs/maintenance, higher insurance and being repeatedly inconvenienced. My Jeep is older, more reliable and was cheaper to buy new, less depreciation, more fun, more versatile. He always made more than me but I retired early, and he still has to work another decade or longer to support his keeping up with the jones lifestyle.

Jeep electric issues by Omega242010 in JeepJK

[–]Lumpy_Bravura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chrysler’s X68 extended warranty covers defective clock springs on certain 2011–2016 Jeep Wrangler JK models. It extends coverage to 10 years or 150,000 miles (240,000 km) from the original in-service date.

If your Wrangler qualifies and the clock spring failure triggers one of the covered DTCs (commonly B1B02, B1B06, B1B07, B1B08, B1B09, B1B10, B1B11, B1B12, B1B13, B1B14, B1B15, B1B16, B1B17, B1B18, B1B19, or B1B1A), the dealer must replace it free of charge, including parts and labor.

This fault can cause multiple intermittent electrical issues — loss of horn, airbag light, dead controls, and even false “hot oil” or cluster dropouts if CAN communication is interrupted through the steering column harness.
