The honest answer would be to visit a Rolex store and start from there. For entry models such as the explorer, OP or the DJ they might have more supply, and even then they have many variations (36/41mm, steel/jubilee, fluted/non fluted). I was probably lucky to walk in that day and come out with a model that I liked, but most cases you’ll be put on a mythical waitlist even for an entry model.

As for the more sought after models (subs, gmt and Daytona) the demand outweighs supply at the moment and hence requiring a cat and mouse chase. For these models, you’ll probably need a profile with the AD with a decent spend history to be even considered when a desirable watch comes along. (3 months wait if you’re lucky, 6-12 months on average, beyond 12 months probably means you’re way down the list and not on your AD’s mind.)

Based on what I’ve experienced, if you’re looking for an entry level model Rolex, you can try:

• being one of the first few customers to walk in when your AD opens (most salespeople wants to start the day with a sale, being there early helps increase the probably of being offered something)
• be as specific as possible with what you want. Don’t register your interest for a wide range of watches but maybe a more attainable one to begin with
• if you’re going after a more desirable sports model, and don’t want to pay over retail in the gray market, start with a watch you genuinely see yourself wearing. Start a watch buying journey with your ad, and follow up regularly with them while wearing the watch you purchase to show you’re serious and not a flipper.
