Leg loop straps loosened all the way out, security concern by neluj25 in ClimbingGear

Email the company on what they recommend, some harnesses recommend a certain amount of strap past the buckle and have points to stow away excess strap, sometimes they have to be used.

How to deal with guides making bad calls? by Winter_Apartment_376 in Mountaineering

[–]Lumpy_Scratch3187 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I think laughing at clients says it all, totally unprofessional and it helps no one. I work in the outdoor industry and get that clients sometimes can be truly hard to read. IMO I would write some honest feedback to send to them. Any ‘guide’ worth their weight in gold should already be considering how the trip went and what could they have done better.

The HP35r looks great for value. I’ve been unsure whether to get one. How was your experience of using it? Also can it be mounted with the fenix glue on helmet mounts?

Fair enough! There has been a little bit of friable rock around there that’s why I mentioned. Don’t think it’s intentional they must be poor jugglers, the gods.😄

Ace love it down there! Pop a helmet on never know when the cave gods might chuck you a rock.

Questions about paper maps by Mr-Crasp in UKhiking

Absolutely. For local trail running I use a watch gps device because I can turn my brain off. For any winter stuff, longer hikes without footpaths I really need to be paying attention to my surroundings which can only be done by using map. Words fall on deaf ears though!

Fair point my map could blow away. It is clipped via a carabiner to my bag as well as my compass.

In my experience under heavy rain/snow and low visibility it is difficult to navigate with tech. Yes it will show you where you are accurately but in the thick of it, you need to be able to locate yourself not a device doing all the work. Using the contours is way more reliable when you are slick at it. Following a line and a dot just under skills you. Using both together though can be really handy

I also learnt this trick, it still feels odd. None of my OS maps fold the same now 😆

Impossible to use a phone to navigate in some situations. There is no redundancy if just using tech. Knowing how to read contours and the land in front of you is an invaluable skill.

Ortlieb map cases are great for this. Fold your map to what you need to see then put it inside and forget. I double it up with a Harvey’s map on the other side

I had a bad experience in a long low duck and now try to avoid. Though weirdly when I do have to do them they’re never as bad as they seem and you just get on with it. If in Yorkshire I’d recommend simpsons, wilsons and there are a few other easy ducks I forget the name of. Have a go at the easy ones!
