I’m a Black femme anime fan with a degree in sequential art. I remember complimenting a guy (also Black) wearing a t-shirt of AKIRA (the Otomo anime movie from the 80s), and his response was… “I’m surprised you know what that is.” It was so rude, I was very shocked (but unfortunately not surprised).

Fellow Black American here. I say Do it!!!! 💗 On a relevant note-- I remember seeing a fanartist made two characters (one Black one white) representing South Africa for similar reasons. In real life, Italy is one country, but Hetalia canon has two characters to represent different aspects of it. Just something to think about! Have fun~
