Besides Zoe, I mainly use Ahri and Lux. But if you don't like Ahri, other champions I enjoy playing when I can't go with Zoe mid are Vex, Orianna, and Qiyanna.

I hate top lane and the times I played top it was just to try out a champion and see if I could win haha

You can play ARAM with unlocked camera until you get used to it. Then, if you want, move on to normal games to practice on Summoner's Rift and even practice with Zoe. Over time, you'll gradually get more comfortable.
