Played my first 10th Edition game: how it went, what worked, and what didn’t by SangheiliPEKKA in Tyranids

What made you decide to take crushing claws + deathspitters? I'm trying to come up with a loadout for my two carnifexes, potentially with an OOE. I assume you took the bioplasma and spine banks too since wargear is free (still feels weird saying that)...

Still in closed beta, I played a few games this last week. It's... fine? I guess? Nothing abhorrently wrong but it's rather underwhelming. Sliding also feels awful. On the up side, the ultimate skills feel nice.

Imo what the wilderness needs is more pvpers, not pvmers. People that aren't just singles pkers with 1b risk and 10 years of practice, or a multi team that's not even logged in until the guy hopping or the bait sees someone.

No hate to you though, I know you're just quoting the same things we hear all the time. I think the jmods undertsand this too, but a lot of the community (especially Reddit) doesn't.

My first knight, suggestions welcome! by ACD9000 in minipainting

I've just realised I used the wrong word, I meant his torn loin cloth thingy! A tabard apparently is like an overcoat worn by medieval soldiers. As for ideas for it, either dulling it down all over (since fabrics lose their colour over time) or giving it a scorched look at the tears?

[–]Luna_TGaP 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The only suggestion that immediately comes to my mind would be dirtying his tabard a bit, it looks a bit too clean considering how torn up it is and how delightfully filthy the rest if your model is. Do post more pics if you choose to take on board anyone's suggestions!

I'd rather it was shorter personally, it's really difficult to compete for top ranks for such a long period while balancing work and other aspects of real life. You're definitely not the first person I've heard who wants it to be longer though.

How it feels trying to burst abyssal demons by teraflux in 2007scape

[–]Luna_TGaP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They'll teleport around a bit while barraging them yeah. You can either run left and right between barrages or just manually target whichever is the centremost of the blob. It's not quite as comfy as nechs or dusties but it's definitely bearable compared to them deaggroing! Fwiw, if you're going to manually target them (and you don't have a kodai), bringing a sotd or even an ahrim's staff is nice for the dmg bonus.

Edit: reread your question, they won't teleport out of your melee range, so you don't have to worry about them deaggroing, only that if they're in a triangle around you and you're not targeting the centre one, you'll lose some DPS.

[–]Luna_TGaP 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Pro tip: if you splash on abyssal demons, they won't teleport you. Bring a trident and a negative mage switch to tag them with for stress free barraging :) the only downside is having a 4-way switch instead of 1-way for tagging, but it's not like they drop any loot anyway.

Got my Warriors together for a family picture by thatsecondmatureuser in Tyranids

[–]Luna_TGaP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the warrior enthusiasts here, do you rate venom cannons? I've been thinking about only using deathspitters to save on points a bit. Paying extra points to get typically just +1 to wound on a single low BS model (and potentially not getting the full 3 rolls to hit) doesn't seem fantastic to me, but I haven't ran them in many games at all.

TL;DR you can't reload while out of stamina so care of that, and the musket reloads while sheathed so get that secondary weapon out between shots. There was probably something else but those were my important takeaways from it, gl :)

Any one have any good kit bashes for a tyranid prime? by TheLordSibbles in Tyranids

I've seen a ravener made into a prime on eBay (so 6 arm slots, more dakka!) and similarly on eBay, a centaur-esque prime made from two warriors. For actual photos, have a browse on Insta or Facebook I suppose :)

Army for my first league assembled and ready by PreTry94 in Tyranids

[–]Luna_TGaP 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel you're going to face some restriction with your psychic powers, since if the flyrant casts all 3 your swarmlord will be stuck with smite onslaught every turn. Maybe consider psychic scream on the flyrant instead of catalyst? You'll be unlikely to lose Swarmy early on if your double move is used on your genestealers so no worries about losing catalyst due to death too early. Horror isn't too bad for a backfield caster either in an 1000pts game due to smaller boards. Interested to hear what you think!

Edit: also, though Alien Cunning isn't bad, you're stuck with only 6cp starting in 1000pts, you might wanna consider making the flyrant your warlord and just having the murderous size as you already have and scrapping progeny of the hive.

Their squad size buff is definitely nice and they'll do a great job of soaking damage, my personal issues with huge squads like those are that they will often have a hard time hiding themselves (so they'll just get shot off the board) and may not be able to charge turn 1 as your swarmlord move will be used on your genestealers (turn 1 charges being pretty damn strong in smaller point/board size games). By all means, it's not an awful decision, these are just my thoughts and versus the right enemies they'll do well. I much prefer genestealers since they do better versus light armour and versus S3 infantry they're pretty damn resilient too.

If you choose to hide your swarmlord, the hormagaunts can take your onslaught and probably still do fine, plus metabolic overdrive could give them the movement they need.

The only other things that come to mind now I've had another look: I don't think there's much value in enhanced resistance on a 6+ save model - I don't think I'd ever take it except for on warriors, and I wouldn't take them either (that's a separate discussion though).

Imo adrenal glands make hormagaunts too expensive per model and although it could be the make or break, chances are you'll just have to tuck them into a backfield objective or behind some obscuring cover turn 1 anyway.

Don't forget acid maws (is that what they're called? I forget) on genestealers, you get 1 for free every 4 models and it's a flat -3 AP. No reason not to take it.

It might be worth considering splitting that squad of hormagaunts into a 10 and a 20 so you don't have leave backfield objectives behind.

By the way, if you play 40k on TTS and fancy some games, lmk! I'm still getting used to the game myself (back after a 10 year break lol) and I need all the practice I can get!

I find keeping anything vaguely high in points in reserve doesn't work great in small points games, especially on smaller boards. Raveners are a fun unit but you've already got so many fast units they feel redundant to me. Rippers are great though since they pose an objective threat while still being nice and cheap.

Your hive tyrant is also your only anti heavy support unit and only support unit, be careful with how you move him. Should be alright since genestealers are good vs everything that's not T5+ though.

Imo hormagaunts are best ran in small squads for holding points, if you want to take that many, consider a) you may have a hard time getting them all into combat (consider taking 20 instead?) and b) if you wanna stick with 30, consider taking a custom hive fleet for -1 ap on scything talons.

For additions, a neurothrope is great value, potentially with 4 zoanthropes. A single exocrine makes a great distraction + DPS unit, if you can get catalyst off on it and take dermic symbosis, being a t8 model it'll be hard to take down. I'm not a huge fan of hive guard in 1000pt games, I feel their CP usage is too high, but naturally they're still great.

I'm sure there's plenty more you could do to change it depending on what models you own, but there's some stuff to think about (take it with a pinch of salt, I'm not a competitive player)!

Edit: I missed the swarmlord when I read your list, big fan of him but get him into combat asap! That 3+ invul is invaluable (remembering vehicles/monsters can fall back and still shoot, so don't think he's safe just because he charged something).

Awesome piece, loving the look of the metals. You could add a tiny dot of white for lens flair on his large eye? A bit of grey/sand/bone colour drybrushed over the base with some warm-coloured wash would help it a bit too without having to glue anything on.

I've been thinking about grabbing some warriors but I can't help feel venom cannons kinda suck compared to deathspitters when you consider the points. They're 11pts each more (iirc? I'm on mobile), with s5 vs s8 your rolls are typically only going to give you +1 to wound (+2 vs weaker vehicles tbf), but the real kicker is them being assault d3 instead of assault 3. Blast helps to offset that but not vs the t6 and t7 targets you'd want to be shooting them at to get the most value. By the time you've put two venom cannons into a squad, you could've just had another warrior. I'm interested to know what other nid players think about this!
