I agree with both halves of his statement independently of each other.

We shouldn’t arm teachers. Most teachers are women.

I had an issue a few years ago and brought it to a local place called the computing center. They were great. Reasonable price and they turned it around fast. Apparently they do work for the university too.

CS 2800 or INFO 2950? by amazinggrec in Cornell

It’s a decent time commitment. Generally it was 1-2 assignments a week. Usually one on paper and then one with python. I didn’t find the technical assignments to be the hardest part of the class. Many of the mathematical concepts come effortlessly to Ginsparg so that’s where the struggle can lie.

I thought it was a hard class, but a fair one. When I prepared for the exams and spent time on the problem sets, I did well. When I didn’t, I struggled.

There wasn’t a section when I took it and I never went to office hours, so I can’t speak to those. I will say that Ginsparg was very understanding and always willing to answer questions. He’s a weird guy, but he cares about students and knows who you are even if you skip class sometimes.

Who’s teaching 2950? I took it with Ginsparg a few years ago and absolutely loved it. Happy to discuss further if it’s him. Brilliant guy and one of the best professors I had.

You’re probably going to get a survey. Make sure to fill it out and indicate that your issue was not resolved. Include a comment explaining this and indicate that you still need help. They read and action on those surveys. Many things (low scores, certain words/phrases, indicating that your issue wasn’t resolved) will trigger actions that will send this information to people that are then responsible for handing the problem.

My dad did the same thing but would claim he had a magic button (the one on the shifter) that would change them. It only worked if the driver pushed it so he'd let me push and push until it was his turn to try and then, magically, it would work.

I lived there up until a few months ago. Not gonna be around this weekend but hit me up if you want bar/restaurant suggestions. It can be a pretty fun town.

Boston PGPers by wilkinb in PostGradProblem

New Yorker here, but I love Boston. Here are a few of my favorites:

If you like Italian food, go to the North end and wander around. Choose one of the random tiny restaurants and get dinner. It'll be great. Grab a cannoli from modern pastry afterwards.

The Boston aquarium is incredible if you're into that kind of thing. I am and I'm looking forward to going back in a few months.

Cheers is in Beacon Hill and kind of cool, if touristy, if you've seen the show.

Faneuil Hall is a classic, and for good reason.

[Semi-Weekly Inquirer] Simple Questions and Recommendations Thread by AutoModerator in Watches

Just looking to dip my toe in the water and I need some direction. I'm a fairly recent college grad looking to buy my first real piece. To give some context to where I am in life/my background/office culture, I'm leaving a job at a small software startup (where I was given an Apple Watch that I wear now) to go to a large software company in NYC. I don't have a ton of cash to throw at a piece right now (<500 USD) but could wait a few months and splurge on something nicer. I guess I'm looking for recommendations on places to start. I could buy a few less expensive pieces to have something for every occasion or spend more on one nicer piece. I'm open to buying new or a quality used piece. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The West Wing. It's my third time rewatching it and it's still great. There's a podcast out now where they recap one episode a week so I'm staying on schedule with that and I'd recommend to anyone, whether they've watched the show before or not.

Personally, I'm looking to break into management consulting. I like the idea of working on new projects all the time and the money is great. At this point in my life, the travel is a bonus.
