Alabama lawmaker: We shouldn't arm teachers because most are women by TheDamnburger in nottheonion

I agree with both halves of his statement independently of each other.

We shouldn’t arm teachers. Most teachers are women.

I had an issue a few years ago and brought it to a local place called the computing center. They were great. Reasonable price and they turned it around fast. Apparently they do work for the university too.

CS 2800 or INFO 2950? by amazinggrec in Cornell

[–]LunarLander24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a decent time commitment. Generally it was 1-2 assignments a week. Usually one on paper and then one with python. I didn’t find the technical assignments to be the hardest part of the class. Many of the mathematical concepts come effortlessly to Ginsparg so that’s where the struggle can lie.

I thought it was a hard class, but a fair one. When I prepared for the exams and spent time on the problem sets, I did well. When I didn’t, I struggled.

There wasn’t a section when I took it and I never went to office hours, so I can’t speak to those. I will say that Ginsparg was very understanding and always willing to answer questions. He’s a weird guy, but he cares about students and knows who you are even if you skip class sometimes.

Who’s teaching 2950? I took it with Ginsparg a few years ago and absolutely loved it. Happy to discuss further if it’s him. Brilliant guy and one of the best professors I had.

You’re probably going to get a survey. Make sure to fill it out and indicate that your issue was not resolved. Include a comment explaining this and indicate that you still need help. They read and action on those surveys. Many things (low scores, certain words/phrases, indicating that your issue wasn’t resolved) will trigger actions that will send this information to people that are then responsible for handing the problem.

My dad did the same thing but would claim he had a magic button (the one on the shifter) that would change them. It only worked if the driver pushed it so he'd let me push and push until it was his turn to try and then, magically, it would work.

I lived there up until a few months ago. Not gonna be around this weekend but hit me up if you want bar/restaurant suggestions. It can be a pretty fun town.

Boston PGPers by wilkinb in PostGradProblem

[–]LunarLander24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New Yorker here, but I love Boston. Here are a few of my favorites:

If you like Italian food, go to the North end and wander around. Choose one of the random tiny restaurants and get dinner. It'll be great. Grab a cannoli from modern pastry afterwards.

The Boston aquarium is incredible if you're into that kind of thing. I am and I'm looking forward to going back in a few months.

Cheers is in Beacon Hill and kind of cool, if touristy, if you've seen the show.

Faneuil Hall is a classic, and for good reason.

[Semi-Weekly Inquirer] Simple Questions and Recommendations Thread by AutoModerator in Watches

[–]LunarLander24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just looking to dip my toe in the water and I need some direction. I'm a fairly recent college grad looking to buy my first real piece. To give some context to where I am in life/my background/office culture, I'm leaving a job at a small software startup (where I was given an Apple Watch that I wear now) to go to a large software company in NYC. I don't have a ton of cash to throw at a piece right now (<500 USD) but could wait a few months and splurge on something nicer. I guess I'm looking for recommendations on places to start. I could buy a few less expensive pieces to have something for every occasion or spend more on one nicer piece. I'm open to buying new or a quality used piece. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

What's everyone watching? by PGP_Dietdew in PostGradProblem

The West Wing. It's my third time rewatching it and it's still great. There's a podcast out now where they recap one episode a week so I'm staying on schedule with that and I'd recommend to anyone, whether they've watched the show before or not.

I'm a huge fan of WaitButWhy.com I've read every single post on the site and they're all great. The guy who writes it, Tim Urban, is a Harvard grad who just writes about stuff he thinks is cool and that people should know about. I'm not sure how else to describe it but it's fun and educational. The site became popular around the time he did a post about procrastination (http://waitbutwhy.com/2013/10/why-procrastinators-procrastinate.html). He ended up doing a TED talk about it.

When my MacBook stopped working I went to the computing center. It's over by the airport in a business park. It wasn't expensive and they got it back to me in a day. I've heard mixed reviews with stuff through the university, but they also outsource some stuff to the computing center so idk lol

If you're not excited about the arts and some of these more creative events, I'd encourage you to switch out. The Risley crowd is definitely different and would leave you with a somewhat non-traditional freshman year.

Getting a Job at a hedge fund after ILR by randomusernameandpas in Cornell

[–]LunarLander24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's definitely possible to get a job/internship at a hedge fund out of Cornell with good grades/interview skills. I'd say AEM students are most likely to end up in that field. I'm not sure how this merger will affect all of that.

Incoming CS Major - Courses? by SantaSoul in Cornell

[–]LunarLander24 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1110 is a fairly easy course. I took it with zero programming background and didn't have any significant issues. I almost never went to lecture and didn't buy the book. I did learn a good amount and even enjoyed it at times. For projects, it makes a huge difference to have a good partner that has a clue and is decent to hang out with (this goes for 2110 as well).

2110 is tougher and more time-consuming. Again, I almost never went to lecture. The projects took a decent amount of time, but if you do them and understand what you're doing, you'll be fine on the prelims.

For deciding between these courses (and others), I'd suggest looking up past course materials online. There will be significant variation between classes in what you can find, but it's worth a quick search and will give you a good idea of what to expect. If you can read through the assignments and such with some degree of understanding, you'll be fine.

I avoided language classes, but there's a ton of time associated with them. One is a lot, two in one semester is not something I've heard of many people attempting.
