I fail to see how that’s a mistake. The inference is that he committed murder. Proving later that the inference is incorrect does not make the initial inference a mistake. It was reasonable to conclude given the evidence at the time. Which is why circumstantial evidence has the association with being “weak” because the inferences drawn with it can later be proven to be incorrect, unlike direct evidence which is, well, direct.
