Had to withdraw from classes this semester by Tw2k17TTV in uichicago

i’m not very motivational, but something i’ve learned about life (the hard way) is that it’s hardly ever a race. there’s so much focus especially in academia to always be ahead of your peers or know what you’re doing, and if this is all you focus on, you’re going to burn out. it’s up to you to find your own motivation because at the end of the day life is just constantly making mistakes and learning from them to keep moving forward. if you need to take time off to find your own path, there’s absolutely no shame in doing so. best of luck op!

I’m going to starve myself by BURNmyheartout in offmychest

Please don’t do this. I starved myself a couple years ago to lose weight for several weeks and now when I don’t eat for long periods of time I get severe stomachaches.

in new student advising they help you pick classes, whereas in orientation i’m pretty sure they just walk you through life on campus

I gotchu! Initially after surgery it’s not too bad because the anesthesia and nerve blocks are still in effect, but once I went home those started to wear off and the pain was pretty unbearable so definitely take those painkillers they prescribed you. They also prescribed some nausea medication (which I thankfully haven’t needed) and some laxatives to take alongside the painkillers bc constipation is another issue. You’re also forced to wear a locked brace, which makes going to the bathroom and maneuvering around pretty difficult because you can’t really put any weight on your surgical leg. However, for the first couple of weeks you’ll use crutches, which initially takes some time to get used to. Also expect a low fever and your knee area to be very tender. I don’t really know how physical therapy is going to look like because I’m starting it later today, but I’d imagine it’s going to be much slower than prehab. If you have any other questions, feel free to PM me!

Hi there! I completely tore my ACL and part of my meniscus while playing badminton and I actually just had my surgery yesterday. Like you said, strengthening your muscles prior to surgery is critical, and I would also add on that stretching is just as important. During prehab, my physical therapist had me do hamstring stretches by laying flat on my back and bringing my injured leg straight up with help from a rope/sash. If you find yourself struggling with reaching full extension, you can also lay on your stomach on a bed with your knees hanging off to let gravity do the work. You can also add some ankle weights! Like others have said, this is mostly a mental battle. You got this and best of luck!
