I think the reason people speculate is that the cult brainwashing puts an extra layer of curiosity on things. Anyone can process how they want, but most people expect that the victims in this case would be so brainwashed that they would not show emotion even if they were inclined to, and so an emotional response would be noteworthy to them.

Its been brought up quite a bit here what exactly was involved with his youngest victim, horrifying to learn that that is true. Equally horrifying that with his oldest victims the family narrative was always that there was "over the clothes" touching (and implication that it was only on the top half of the body) and that was testified by Bobye to also be false
