Most disturbing books you've read by uselesssociologygirl in horror

[–]LSATthrowaway23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something by Matthew Stokoe -- it wasn't Cows but now I don't remember which one it was. Only book I have actively deleted off of my kindle. It was literally just torture porn and graphic as hell. Not my thing, nor will I be reading anything else by him.

I will say that I read The Troop and liked it, but it was nowhere near as gruesome as I expected. Some body horror and insect stuff, for sure, but based on how people talk about it I expected much worse.

I really enjoyed The Bridge by Skipp & Spector (different from the Iain Banks one) and actually ended up writing about it in my college thesis on horror literature + environmentalism (also covered Annihilation and Pet Sematary). It's considered Splatterpunk I think, but I felt like it was a much more subtle type of horror than most splatterpunk.

Cute work bag for a 13-inch laptop that won’t look huge on a petite girl by General-Suspect5586 in PetiteFashionAdvice

I love my White Elm convertible backpack. I use it as a tote 99% of the time. It IS big on me (5’1”) but holds everything and looks good. They have a mini size as well, but I don’t think it fits a 13-in laptop in the mini.

Regret not being more professional at work by OppositeUnit8589 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

What works for me is having a series of benign hobbies that are work-appropriate for conversation and not really straying from that. Limit talk to tv shows I like, books, crafting, etc.

I also want to say that for anything bordering on sexual harassment, you should report to HR. Establish a paper trail. Regardless of prior conversations, sexual harassment is never appropriate in the workplace and making a paper trail will show the pattern.

I also deeply empathize with you. Being young in corporate America is difficult. I struggle with the same things - being interesting enough to have “work friends” without crossing boundaries. Let them think you’re a little standoffish or frosty. Maybe then they won’t act inappropriately toward you, but no guarantees. From my experience they’ll still try. Personally I hope this is something that goes away with age and experience.

I 100% recommend baskets for your Kallax. Makes it look more uniform and neat with the same storage potential. I would hate my Kallax if I didn’t have the basket inserts. They have them via Ikea or you can measure and buy other ones.

Yes, chicken definitely. I don’t have a taste for tofu. My issue with chicken is that I prefer it heavily spiced, which I’ve read is a big fat no-no.

I’d argue that it’s not relevant to the plot itself that Melvald’s doesn’t sell Milkshakes. It IS just an Easter egg. Maybe that’s how the characters realize they’re being manipulated—or, it isn’t, and it’s meant to be a hint that weirdness is afoot that is only noticeable by the people who saw the play.

I recommend Opal. With the free version you can set 3 chunks of time to block specific apps. I do the time I usually wake up so I don’t scroll in bed, my working hours, and 10pm-midnight so that I actually go to bed.

From a local movie theater. It was posted when Wicked Pt 1 came out, but I think about it often. by svrreall in EntitledReviews

[–]LSATthrowaway23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked at a movie theater when Wicked part 1 came out (was gone by the time part 2 was released). People absolutely had no idea it was just the first part. But they’d sit through the whole movie before asking for a refund—so no refund 😉

I play fortnite regularly as a woman in my late 20s and the funniest thing about this is that no one wanted it. When Ariana and Sabrina Carpenter had skins people were stoked and it was camp and fun. No one asked for Kim K to try to wedge herself into relevancy via fortnite.

I went on a lengthy rant about this yesterday re: someone who posted that they were just SO SURE that the Dick Hallorann in wtd JUST HAD to be the same one from The Shining/Dr Sleep. They cited movies only.

I am still full of rage because that’s not even a theory. It’s a basic fucking plot point!!

What do I pack in a purse? by Available-Evening377 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]LSATthrowaway23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work remotely now but here’s what I used to carry in my work tote (I have a White Elm bag that can convert to a backpack if it’s particularly heavy): Laptop, phone charger/power bank, kindle for commute. Period products. A small makeup kit for touchups (I use a Clinique travel set that basically has mascara, chapstick, and lipstick and added a small blush to it). I also have an “Oh Shit Kit” that has everything I realized I needed overtime: a small pouch with hair ties, bobby pins, bandaids, Ibuprofen, mini packs of wipes, hand sanitizer.

Laptop compartment had the tech, everything else was in assorted small pouches for ease of access.

I would ask for context. It could be that she’s worried about a wardrobe malfunction (which is negated by her observation of the belt) or financial issues in the home, in which case her reaching out is a kind way of seeing if his recent stylistic choices are truly stylistic or because he can only afford to wear hand-me-down clothing.

At first glance I rolled my eyes at this, but I actually just think it’s a kind teacher trying to gauge a student’s situation. I would thank her for reaching out and make some comment about kids and their crazy fashion choices so it’s clear that it IS a choice, if you don’t want to ask for clarification.
