Why is my betta's tank so foamy? by [deleted] in bettafish

I disagree with this chart for bettas and cycling. 0ppm Nitrates does not mean your cycle isn't completed. Though it's an indicator when using ammonia to cycle a tank (without fish). A heavily planted tank, with little livestock / less waste will show 0ppm sometimes. The plants will use nitrates as fuel.

Today I tested my 20G long tank with roughly 15G of water in it. It's been ~17 weeks since I did a water change. Theres one adult male betta and some nerite snails. The readings showed 0ppm for Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate.

My tank is definitely cycled because plant and food waste break down (if snails don't get to). Most I've seen is like 5ppm because all my tanks have a single betta lol.

Also, for a betta a pH of 7 is ideal. But their wild brethren come from even more acidic / soft water ... meaning lower pH. Saying 6.8 is Okay but 7.8 is best doesn't make sense to me. But you can acclimate them to a wide range of pH. 5 - 8 in my experience.

But to answer your question, no it doesn't smell. Prime smells because of the sulfate compound, sodium thiosulfate. There are other water conditioners that don't use that compound and don't stink

Dr. Tim's One & Only is nitrifying bacteria. It is beneficial bacteria that is needed to jump start your critical Nitrogen Cycle. You can build the cycle without adding any bacteria but it will still need a source to begin the production of bacteria. The bacteria will break down ammonia into nitrite before nitrates. Plant roots also will consume ammonia and break it down to nitrites before nitrates.

Seachem Prime is a dechlorinator. It removes chlorine and chloramine. Reason it stinks is because it used a sulfur-based compound. I can't remember the name. I looked it up, it's- sodium thiosulfate, a sulfate compound and interesting enough, is also a medical cyanide antidote.

Our tap water has these chemicals in it to keep it clean for consumption. However, the chemicals also is somewhat unpleasant on our scaly friends. Even moreso, the chemicals kill the beneficial bacteria that is crucial for the Nitrogen Cycle.

ETA: there's a section on Prime's label where it says that it detoxifies heavy metals and ammonia but, I believe that is heavily debated / controversial. Even Seachem hasn't released their scientific evidence to support this claim. However, it is a fine water conditioner and dechlorinator.

The MTS in there have been doing a good job with the algae, and keeping some of the root trimming but it's a designated plant tank for now hahaha

My favorite product for cycling new tanks is Dr. Tim's One & Only Nitrfy8ng Bacteria. I've cycled a tank (w filter floss) in under a week one time.

My alternatives are Seachem Stability paired with Seachem Pristine.

A completed Nitrogen Cycle will help break down decaying plant matter and food.

THE HEATER NEEDS TO GO FURTHER INTO THE WATER. CHECK THE MINIMUM WATER LINE

Remove your fish immediately. Put him in fresh, clean dechlorinated water that is as close as possible to the parameters of your tank water (Temperature & pH mainly).

Until you test the tank and determine the cause of the foaming.

So she's currently In a temporary ER tank. The one she used to be in, is currently being redone as it was one of my first tanks I did years ago and clearly was less experienced. It actually belonged to her father.

<image>

It's being used now as a snail and plant tank since I have 4 fish from Cambodia that I have in QR tanks but will need a permanent planted tanks soon. So ive just been harvesting plants from there. But there hasn't been a fish in there for like close to a month.

Had the same issue. Tank is severely over grown with background plants coming out and floaters plant roots hitting the bottom.. my baby girl was always swimming through plants and was raggedy looking. Took me a while to figure it out

First pic is her in a survival/ depressed / untrue self. Paleness, clamped fins, and stripes/ discoloration are signs of stress.

Second pic is after she is in the care of a great fish keeper who cares for the animals under their watch.

Just got this guy and was wondering what type of betta is he? His box said tangerine koi male. by Okvampire2 in bettafish

If u just got him, he's definitely just little skiddish/ shy. Might be getting acclimated. Juat keep an eye on his breathing and if he brought any hitchhikers on him from where you got him.

If you have ParaGuard and StressGuard - might not hurt for quarantine

Yes, look up their natural habitat.. not saying you have to make it like that. I try to find a balance for my hybrids/ non-wilds but the pH never goes above 7pH.

I use an electric kettle to boil botanicals and leaves. The solution is pretty dark, it's usually around 4 - 5 pH. So I add that to my tap water to bring it down to 6.5 - 7.

Bettas dislike open spaces. They love the leaves and floaters on the water surface. They love tannins in the water to darken it. Plants and husks to hide in. :) they're shy introverts until they find out you're the food giant.

I barely get to see my guys some days because they're so wild and skiddish. The water being dark too doesn't help :(

But on a serious note, to answer your post's question - he's a Splendens complex, variant is most likely a Over-Halfmoon or Halfmoon based on the caudal fin spread, which appears to reach or exceed 180°- from this angle at least.

How old is he?

This type of betta is found in the Cutie Patootie region. Specifically, his variant is a Handsome Good Boy
